Need Help - Remington 592M 5mm Centerfire?

I picked up on of the guns from my buddy that passed away recently and am a little stumped on it currently.

It is a Remington 592M, barrel is stamped 5mm Rem. So I picked up some 5mm rim-fire ammo and took it out yesterday to try it out. Chambered a round, pulled trigger....CLICK...nothing. Extracted the round and it has a firing pin hit dead center of the case. So I pulled rest of rounds out of it and started looking at it. Sure enough bolt has a center fire firing pin. Since I obviously cannot call the guy who owned the gun I started asking around. Another friend I knew said that people used to make conversions to make these into a center-fire so that you could reload the brass.

I looked around on internet a little and found minimal info so far. My question is, what was done to swap this over to a center-fire? And if I can find the guys original dies and brass how much of a benefit is to go this route over rim-fire. Id assume accuracy and having brass.

I haven't got over to go through his reloading equipment yet, but id assume ill find brass and dies for it.

Any info I can get on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Brian

There are two conversions out there, the 5mm Craig, and the 5mm Schroeder. The folks that have the 5mm Craig are not making brass any longer. Last I heard, Steve Schroeder is making brass, when he can get a hold of Hornet brass. He has no web presence, so it is phone call only (619-423-3523).

Aguila brought back the 5mm rimfire for a while, but they stopped making the ammunition a couple of years ago. It is in the $25.00 to $35.00 price range, when you can find it.

If you can find the dies, then you should be in it for a minimal cost (assuming you can get brass). If you don't have the dies, then it could be a lot more expensive.

I would call Steve S. and discuss what you have, and see if he is still making brass, and if it is available.

If you want to go the rimfire route, let me know. I may trade you one of my rimfire bolts, and some rimfire ammo, if you are interested. I already have a few rimfires in 5mm, so I am interested to try the centerfire (I have dies).

The 5mm Remington Rimfire Magnum "should" have been the king of rimfires. With a 30 grain varmint bullet going over 2500fps, it's downrange energy was unmatched in a rimfire.

Great thanks. Wednesday I am supposed to go over and look through his reloading equipment. I'll see what I find and go from there.

Is there away to tell if it is a Craig or schroeder

I have a friend who has the Schroeder conversion and his brass is made from machined 22 Hornet brass. It is very obvious that its made from 22 Hornet brass. He did buy some Craig brass and IIRC, the Craig version has CNC machined brass that should show no 22 Hornet head stamp residue like the Schroeder brass does.

I just called him. He says in addition that the Schroeder conversion has a true center fire bolt head with a spring loaded CF firing pin. The entire bolt head can be easily be swapped with the original RF bolt head. The Craig conversion has a machined slot cut in the original bolt head face and the CF firing pin slides in this slot with a CF pin tip.

I hope that makes sense.

Little update. The family brought over brass/dies/bullets/powder/ect. And Guess what was in there! RCBS 5mm Craig Dies, new brass, loaded rounds, and bullets. I have only got to shoot a few to test it out, but nothing more than that. Ill post more when I get a chance to tinker more with it. Some of the brass is click as snot, it has absolutely no markings on it what so ever. You can tell it was custom brass.
