i can get the pelt off the animal without any trouble. the problem i run into is geting the tail seperated from the hide without cutting all the way to the tip. so can somebody plaese tell me how to do this because i'm new to trapping and i got a really nice coon the other night.

the tail stripper is the way to go I use the alum type but plastic works also. use the knife or tail zipper and skin the tail just alittle then pull the stripper down while holding the base of the tail with the other hand. you know when you do it right because the tail bone smackes you in the face LOL

two 12 penny nails , clothes pins, dowels work also.

thanks guys i thought that there was a tool i was missing but wasn't sure. i ended up just cutting up the tail enough to finish case skinning my coon and cutting the tail bone off the body so i could get it into the freezer. so i have a pelt with a tail at the moment. but boy it would be nice if the weather would turn cold so i would have had enough time to have the chance to ask. any way thanks for the advice and i'm sure i'll have another question here shortly.good luck to all this season.

I always split the tail half way down and then use a set of standard pliers to strip the tail down. I hold on the the actualy plier part not the handles..
