Need help with two stage trigger install.

Helping a buddy put his new RRA two stage trigger in last night. He was not paying attention to how the old trigger came out... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif. Well we got the RRA in fine but we just have one question about the hammer spring.

Do the two legs for the hammer spring go underneath the trigger pin? or do they rest on top of the trigger pin? It works both ways but is obviously more compressed with it on top of the trigger pin and creates more force. I am leaning on below the trigger pin. Any help would be great as i will be getting my own AR soon and putting a trigger in it as well. Thanks

The springs rest on TOP of the trigger pin. Unless, of course, the installation instructions instruct you to do otherwise......although I haven't ever seen it any other way.

There's a WEALTH of knowledge, including some step-by-step instructions with pictures of builds and modifications on www.ar15.com And I'm not trying to direct you to another site, but there is lots there for the AR guys.

The rock river trigger instructions dont tell much as far as how it should look or sit. No pictures either.

I guess i didnt clarify very well when i said trigger pin but i mean the pin that goes through the trigger holding it in the lower. Just to be clear.

HAMMER ASSEMBLY

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PARTS: hammer (with J-pin installed), hammer spring, hammer retaining pin
TOOLS: 5/32" drive pin punch

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Install spring onto hammer, ends of spring to rear and shoulder on back of hammer.
Install hammer in receiver with feet pointing rearward away from hammer
Use 5/32" punch to retain hammer in place as you insert hammer retaining pin.
Like the trigger pin, you may have to push down and align the holes perfectly in order to push the pin in all the way.
Ends of the hammer spring will rest on top of the trigger pin , with one end in the groove on the trigger pin.
Inserting the hammer pin may require some effort, as the J-pin in the hammer will catch the grooves in the pin.
FUNCTION CHECK

Verify that hammer locks to the rear when pushed back.
Verify that hammer pivots forward when trigger is pressed.
Without releasing the trigger, push the hammer back again and verify that it locks (caught by disconnector).
Releasing the trigger should not cause the hammer to pivot fully forward (caught by trigger).
Hammer will fall when trigger is pressed.

I guess i found it thanks a ton for the help and link. I think all i need now is insight from someone that has done a Rock River Two stage to tell me if its the same with the after market trigger as it is with the stock trigger. Thanks

If you're referring to the spring, YES, I have an RR 2-stage in my rifle, and the spring does indeed set on top of the pin you are referring to.

The hammer will be a little difficult to install due to the close quarters and the difficulty in lining it up while it is under the spring's pressure. There are a myraid of suggestions as to how to make this easier, but patience and determination are the beest tools. Just take your time and it'll go in there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks a ton Hidalgo you have been a great help. I will go tear it down tonight and correct it as the spring legs are sitting under the trigger pin as of now. It works just fine but the spring tension would be less. I will change it ASAP. Your right about it being a pain to get the larger pins in . I pretty much just lined it up and pounded it in....

P.S. how do you like the rock river trigger?

I like mine fine. Some people prefer Timneys, others like other brands. Just whatever suits your needs & pocketbook, I suppose.

Hidalgo I was about to send out the troops to look for you!!!!!

Glad you resurfaced. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'd put it on top of the trigger pin. There should/maybe a groove in the trigger pin that the spring may rest in. This will help keep the pin in place also.

Good, Now you know how to install it. The next question is: Does it work like you wanted it to? Mine DID NOT! It had a whole bunch of creep and was a bit too heavy for a target/P-Dog rifle.

I ended up putting it in the mail to D-Tech for a tune-up. Now there is no second stage creep and the trigger breaks at 2 lbs. As Mike Milli told me, "The RRA 2 Stage NM trigger is a good starting point for what can be a really great trigger". It's way better than the Timney in my heavy varminter.

Just got done fixing it tonight and putting the spring on the top of the pin instead of under the spring. Little more snappy once it goes but it works either way.

SodakJim, i am kinda feeling like you did. It is not really what i was hoping for. I like the two stage for sure but the second stage does have a little more creep and it feels like a little more than a 4+ pound pull. Way better than the 7 or 8 pound from the original but needs some work. How much did the trigger work cost?

I would rather Mike give you a quote, but it was cheap and quick. Be sure to tell him exactly what your after, and he will come [beeep] close. I only sent him the trigger, hammer, and springs.
