Need load info on the .338 Win Mag

Will be going moose hunting this fall and would appreciate a starting point with this caliber for a load. Will be reloading.

RL- 19 is a good powder for this caliber.
For moose I would use nothing heavier than a 200 gr., there would no need to run it at "full" magnum speeds either.

It doesn't take much gun to take a Moose down, '06's, 7 mag and few others have been doing just fine on these animals for many years.

200 gr starting for RL19
72gr - 2787 fps

Max load
77gr - 2985 fps

I am just starting to load for a .338 as well. I have been loading 200 grain Hornady SP's over 69.0 grains of H4350, sparking them with Federal 215 primers and using only the manuals as a reference, as I have no chronograph, these loads should be moving in the neighborhood of 2750 fps. I wanted to work my way up to full magnum loads, and decided to ease my way up, as it were.

If memory serves, there is a Nosler Accubond in the 200 grain weight category, and if I were heading out moose hunting, I would probably put together some of those if I were determined to stay with the 200 grain pill. Otherwise, I would probably try to work up some kind of load with a 210 grain partition.

(I say that, never having pulled the trigger on a moose before, so take that advice for what it is, speculation.)

I have never been Moose hunting, though I hope to. In my 338 a 215 Sierra is the min bullet with enough length to shoot off the lands at less .010" for my gun. A Speer 225 spbt is an ideal bullet for all game other than the large brown bear. Have shot a lot of Sierra 215 spbt on deer, and a great long range bullet (250+). A 200 gr in a 338 should work for Moose from what I have read, probably a great Caribou load. I am some what anal about a long jump to the lands in large calibers, for accuracy.

The 338 Win is one of the great Alaskan cartridges......teamed up with the good 225 Nosler Part or Barnes TSX you can tackle most of the game here. With the 250 Nosler Part or again the 225 TSX you can handle the largest of Brown Bear on the coast.

I like the 250 Sierra BT and Reloader 19 @ 73.0...in my 338
Win.
With the 225s with RL 19 @ 75.3.....Fed 215 and WW brass.

If it is for moose I would not use a bullet of less than 225, unless it is the 210 partition or a barnes X of some sort. Currntly I am using 225 partitions I have used 200 nosler bt's but only on deer. The 225 accubond is the one i'll try next or just a plain cup and core 250 I have got a season or 2 of he 225 partitions left.
