Hey, fellows I have a serious problem. got a new remington 700adl in .204 last year and put a simmons 2.5X10 power scope on it the same as i have on my 25-06 but was missing close shots. 2 cats at less than 30yds and a yote at about 60yds. so hunted the rest of the year with my 25-06 with no problems making kills from 30yds out to 150yds. thought it must be the scope on the .204 so i sent it back to the factory and they sent me a new simmons 44 that i put on the .204. i sighted it in 1 inch high at 100yds on 10 power. well went out this morning and called in a cat. had the scope on 5 power. clean miss at 25yds. the cat just turned around and looks around and i shot agin. another clean miss. cat walks to brush line and stops agin looking around probaly 40yds now. Boom another clean miss cat just walks off. never even ran. listen guys i'm not the best shot in the world but by god i can hit a cat at that distance. if it tells you anything i shot 40 for 40 at my military shoot last year. and i didn't have no cat fever either.i'm dumbfounded and so mad i could chew rocks. what in the world could be going on. like i said this rifle is sighted in at 1 inch high at 100yds i thought i should be dead on at 25-30yds. oh i'm shooting hornady 40gr v-max. not that that should make any diffrence. guys if you can help i'd appreciate it. well looks like i'll be shooting old death wind (the 25-06)the rest of this year also. Brad

Hey brad I would let some one else shoot thet rifle and see what it does, then go from there. Did you know that when shooting on the bench you might be good on zero but shooting in the field your zero might be different. Make sure the other person shoot like you were on the field. That what I'ld do.

Try shooting the gun at lower power at the range and test it if you think its the scope. If that proves ok, could you be jerking the trigger ?(adrenalin) I know thats what I was doing with a Rem. 788. Good luck.

check your rings and base,,i had a gun do the same things a
few years back and i found out my rings were loose.
the manufacturers tell you NOT to use loc-tite on the rings but i always use a dab of loc-tite on my rings and have not had a problem since
but i agree with "doe",,,,let someone else shoot the gun
if it is a problem other than the scope itself,,i would commend the Simmons company for giving you a new scope
i had a 2x simmons on my 44 magnum about 16 years ago and the glass chipped,,when i sent it in they UPGRADED my scope to one of their more costly models,,,and ive been happy with the company ever since
But i hope you solve your problem and when you do could you please post the problem in here because i am curious and your post might save someone or myself alot of BS
And you may want to see if there is any nicks around the muzzle
Thank you

Ditto again,
When I shot my .204 at 25 yards and then moved to 100, I was very surprised to find that my poi was very high.
I would shoot the rifle at 25 yds and see what its doing and use the scope on a lower power as well. BT53

Are you using high rings? I always try to use the lowest possible scope rings I can get away with. I also agree with hogbuster the POI at 25 yards with high rings may suprise the hell out of you.

no fellas, i havn't shot it at 25yds but., thats my next thing to do. i bet it will surprise me. i also thought of when i do my shoot for the military using the m-16. we sight in for 300yds and i shoot at pop up targets ranging in distance from 25yds to 300yds and i know, to hit the 25yd target i have to acctually aim at the dirt at the base of the target. i remember the first time i shot the m-16 at 25yds i didn't hit that target either. i didn't know what was going on till the range master told me to aim at the dirt at the base of the target at 25yds and to aim right on at the further distrances. could this be what is happening to me with the .204? maybe i could sight dead on at 50yds? most shots are 25yds to 150yds though i did make a 278yd shot on a yote last year. Brad

Is the eyepiece tight? Maybe it came loose from turning the power up/down. That happened to me & you won't get the same POI because the eyepiece glass is canted. Just A Thought.

My CZ 204 is sighted in 1" high at 100 yards. At 50 it's about .25" Low and at 25 it's about 1" low. If you have tall rings it will be more pronounced.

But I agree, the best thing to do is to shoot it at 25-50-100 yards and see where it prints. You may want to try it at 3 power and at 10 power.

Did the rifle group at 100yds on the initial sight in? Will it still group at 100yds? Ditto on the check it at 25yds and also try the low and high power at 25yds.

I had a similar problem and finally eliminated it by replacing the Simmons scope.

Could well be two factors.....
First POI change with power change.
Second, perceived POA due to parallax.

Combine the two and you've got real problems.

me!

OK when you shoot from the bench do you grab the forend of rifle or just shoulder it with rifle laying on a bipod or sand bag because if you just shoulder it and sight it in that way off the bag or bipod the point of impact will be drastically different when you fire it with both hands holding the rifle snug

According to my ballistics program at 25 yards you are still
.63" lower than your line of sight. That should not matter at all when shooting at a bobcat. It is dead on at 46 yards and at about 220 to 225 yards would be your zero. I think you have a scope problem. I won't slam your simmons but out of all I ever had they gave me the most trouble.

The M-16's we used in the AIR_FORCE had a rear peep sight that was adjustable for close in shooting from 25 yards out to 150 yards if I remember correctly, then for longer shots you would rotate the peep to the higher peep setting. I allways shot EXPERT and don't ever remember having to aim at the dirt to hit in the torso. The combat weapons of today might be different tho! LOL!!! I would shoot from a bench @ 25 yards and see where it prints then move the target out to 100 yards, and see where it prints. Its really up to you, where you have it sighted in, since you are behind the recoil pad while hunting!
Hope this helps!

tanks for the info guys. it will just take some time and lead at the range to figure this one out. thanks Brad

Here's something to try. Use the 50 yard line and fire two shots at 10X and then two at 8X and then two at 6X and then two at 4x and finally two at 2X and see where they hit. Your scope may be changing POI as you change powers on the scope.
