I've shot about a dozen of them over the last few years. My technique is to use a night vision device to locate them and walk up to about 30' away. They will be oblivious if you don't make a lot of noise. Put the NVD down, and shoot him with 17HM2 or HMR semi-auto rifle with a flashlight mounted. Light him up with the flashlight - they will freeze long enough to get a fix and shoot. Here is where the semi-auto beats a bolt gun. Keep firing until he stops moving. Sometimes that's one shot, other times it takes several. I've never had one spray in this scenario, however they will start leaking if you leave them overnight. I've also had other animals come and start eating him, opening the stink sack.
