Anyone had any experience with one of these? I have a chance to buy one, cheap. Are they accurate? This one has a Simmons Deerfield scope,3x9. It looks good.

nope you'll only hate it .So to save you any heartbreak just put me in touch with the guy sellin it and I'll buy it(he he.).

I will hate myself if I don't buy it. I think I can get it for $100.00. Just not sure about owning a 270. I am wondering if my 14 yr old can shoot it(recoil)...

I don't know about the quality of a NEF but I do know about the 270. My 13 year old son shot an antelope with one this year and he asked if he could shoot all of his animals with it. Not much felt recoil on a 270. Should be just fine for a young shooter.

I have one in a 223. It's a tacker driver (3/4" group @100 yds. with factory ammo). They are great rifes. Never shot the 270 so no help there, but I wouldn't let it slip away.

Kydog: I have the NEF handy rifle in a 223 and it is a fun gun to shoot. I would expect it to shoot as good in bigger calibers like the 270 as it dose in the 223.

Does the handy rifle sport interchangeable barrels type feature or do you buy an entire rifle each time?

Sharp Shooter, the NEF Handi-Rifle that are designated SB-2 can be rebarreled at the Factory. For the most part the cartridges offered are as follows:
.22 Hornet, 22" with Sights ($75.00)
.223 Remington, 22" with Scope Mount Base ($75.00)
.223 Remington, 22" Bull Barrel with Scope Mount Base ($85.00)
.223 Remington, 24" Bull Barrel with Scope Mount Base ($95.00)
.30-30 Winchester, with Sights (($75.00)
.357 Magnum, with Sights ($75.00)
.44 Magnum, with Sights ($75.00)
.45/70 Government, with Sights ($75.00)

Certain frames that start with certain serial numbers can also be fitted with the following calibers; .243 Winchester 22" & .24" Bull Barrel, .270 Winchester 22", .280 Remington 26", .30-06 Springfield 22", 7x57 Mauser 24", and 7x64 Brenneke 24". I believe all of these barrels come with the Weaver Type Scope Mount Base also. I'M not sure of the prices or availability.

There are also several shotgun barrels that can be fitted to this receiver. 12ga., 20ga., 28ga., and .410ga. in different lengths, and with either fixed chokes, screw in choke tubes, to with rifled sights. The prices range from $35.00 to $55.00 if I remember correctly.

While the NEF Handi-Rifle is at the Factory getting an accessory Barrel(s) fitted, the factory will do a Free Trigger Job on it. They eliminate any creep, and most come back crisp at between 3 & 3 1/2 pounds.

I have been contemplating getting one of these in .280 Remington, and then sending it back and getting a 24" Bull Barrel in .223 Remington, and a 24" or 28" 12ga. Barrel with a Steel Shot Choke Tube, as well as the Factory Trigger Job. They also offer several different Stocks and Forends from the Factory to be purchased as parts.

Ky, I personally think you're correct in your concern on the 270 recoil. If he's already a shooter as in shotguns and other firearms that have recoil, you might have the same success Mike did with his son. The 270 is a potent round that could turn some kids away from shooting.

I'm fifteen and have a rem 7400 .270 and I think it shoots fine. Its a gas operated action and that helps. It has a kick but you get use to it. I've killed bear and deer with a 270 and they always pile over instantly.

I shoot a NEF in 280 for deer and coyotes..it is a tack driver too.I can lay 3 shot groupings at 100 yards that make one ragged hole. The recoil isn't bad at all and my 11 yr/o daughter shoots this gun.The trigger could be much better..but it's a blast to shoot.

Caninus, are you handloading for your .280 NEF or shooting strictly factory loads? What kind of performance are you getting, velocity & accuracy?

I have been considering a .280 NEF Handi-Rifle myself.

Thanks

Larry

Everybody takes recoil differently, and how much you shoot, and the results you expect are all different. That said; a 280 in an NEF will thump you pretty good.

You can't shoot well if it hurts to pull the trigger. You can claim to be tough as much as you want, it won't help your followthrough or your shot placement.

Jack is exactly right. I had this point proven to me this fall when helping a friend break the barrel in on a .300 Winchester Magnum. The first couple 3 shot groups were very impressive, but after that it was tough to get a good group (at least with me doing the shooting).
