nef/scope base

hello, i picked up a ultra hunter for the heck of it last night & noticed a gap between the front of scope base & barrel front meaning towards the muzzle it seems this is the only way it will work, they have a screw to snug towards barrel.my question is do you allow that to touch the barrel ?? or back off slightly ?? i like it snug but also think that would add pressure as things heat up...seems somewhat odd i also understand it's a inexepensive gun.just wondering what other nef guys think......

H&R's spec is .0015" clearance off the barrel for the set screw. It's there just to support big scopes mounted on the end of the rail. I prefer to have the forward ring closer to the supported part of the rail if at all possible.

I wouldn't do that...up to you though.

Encore bases do the same thing...without the little set screw. They are good to go just they way they were built.

Ya, it looks kind of odd, but the Encores have had that "overhang" all along too. They seem ok, so far from my experience.

I don't think you gain or lose anything by whacking it off. It just looks goofy on the NEF. I was ready to whack mine off on my 30-30 but decided to lose the scope altogether and go back to the factory irons (plastics!).
