NEIGHBORS DOG ATTACKED, HELP ME IDENTIFY

Hey guys... Just found out today that my neighbors dog has been attacked. It is a type of a schnauzer...The pic that I post is not the same as it is. Anyways...They let it out the other night and it was wandering through the woods. This dog is old, probably about 13 years old now. It is getting slower and weaker.

It can still bark and such but you can tell it is an older dog. The pictures that I include are drawn the best to my memory and scale.

The cuts on each side are approximately one inch long and about 1/2 inch deep. On the left side one cut is about 3 inches. On one side there are dots which look much like teeth marks. It is hard to tell of their depth because they are only puncture marks.

The area is known to have coyotes, fox, raccon, bear, and god knows what else...Wouldn't be surprised of bobcat. There are woods there that stretch for miles and they're mountain tops too. No houses around at all.

It is at Godfrey, Pennsylvania along the allegheny river. Mile marker 36 I believe it is.

I need you guys to come together and please try to help assess what could have attacked their dog. I will also post this on predatormasters forums. Guys, be careful with your dogs, I know you guys spend alot of time and money with them. Please help.

Logically, an animal biting that low would be exposing it's own neck to attack. Not smart. However, a smaller, lower to the ground animal would be lunging up to attack. Like a badger. But, my personal opinion is that it's not a bite at all. I think the dog got biatch-slapped by a bear. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

When I was a kid we had a big ol tom cat that kept the barn and haystack pest population in check - him and several dozen of his offspring. All of the sudden the kitty population dropped pretty rapidly and he showed up with marks very similar to the ones youve illistrated, only on his hind quarters. As it turned out we had a large owl that had a taste for cat in the area.
Put a stop to that by the way , if cats needed killin around the place I had a dog that loved them, and mom got worried about her little foo foo dog disapearing.
But the marks look just about the same.

First off, I have no idea what may or may not have attacked your friend's pet. BUT.....I would ask you to be ABSOLUTELY SURE that the animal is up to date on it's vaccinations. Rabies, distemper, and other things come to mind. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

hidestretcher...Our family and all of our neighbors are very religiously keep our animals up to date on all vaccinations and such. Thank you for the concern.

No problem Falcon.....and I didn't mean any disrespect, or wasn't saying you neglected your animals. But my wife is a veterinarian, and I have seen a LOT of unvaccinated animals that were bitten or scratched, and had to eventually be put down. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif It's a bad scene. Glad you're taking good care of yours! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Im in with the low to the ground dweller.Like a badger or such.Like NASA said(also that was a very good observation on your part). But i dont think it was a bear because if it was a bear more than likely the thirteen year old dog couldnt of hacked it,and also it would of had to be playin pattycake because it has a cut on the right also.(but it could of got that from the fly threw the air.If biotch slapped by a bear)

I would say that dog was attacked by the sneaky and vicious Sharpie, similar to the one Terrell Owens made famous...

After looking at your pictures, I'd bet it is a raccoon that clawed and bit that dog. It is not uncommon for a raccoon to mess up a dog, usually the dog lives, but not always. That's my two cents worth.

hey doghelmet...I thought about that too...but the depth of the cuts didn't seem possible without leaving some smaller scratches. Like...on the left side, there is just the one deep gash. Think of your hand out, getting ready to scratch...It doesn't seem likely that only one finger would hit, and scratch so deep that it goes down to 1/2 inch-without any of the other fingers making contact.

A large Raptor of some type. Eagle, large Hawk, large Owl. Dave Fisher of PA fame for Beagles has had similiar marks on his dogs after the raptor mistook the dog for the rabbit it was in pursuit of. He just never knew what bird it actually was.

You ain't got no badgers in PA, do ya?
