Hey everybody. I'm new to the board and just checking things out. I'm a big hunter, although not always the best at it. I just moved to Del Rio, TX, and think I have found a place to hunt. The owner says he wants to get rid of bobcats. I've done some coyote hunting, but never bobcats and to compound problems, will probably only be able to hunt with a bow. I'd appreciate any advice on hunting 'cats, and on bowhunting predators in general. Thanks

Bobcats seem to kinda stay put. If you see one, and dont get a shot, come back at a later date and they will be there again 9 out of 10 times. You gotta get close with a bow, so if you use an electronic call you nned to keep it within your confidence zone. They are super stealthy, and hard to see. Would be tuff to do this with a hand call I would suspect. I would suggest using a sgh head by G5 if you have some decent ke coming off your arrowrest. Try not to educate them too much though. they seem to like high pitched calls. Rodents and birds. also if your state allows, a shiny feathery decoy hanging by a string will help keep their attention off of you. Good luck.

welcome . i have been into guns for 30= years and still have a lot to learn , this forum can help you with any questions you might have , i have learned a lot in the short time i have been here, so find guys in your state and ask away , have fun and welcome ,, TACTICAL TIMMY

Thanks fellows. One more question. I have a .17mach2 that I use for squirrel hunting. I know that it might be a little light, but I would assume that using a centerfire rifle might be a little overkill, especially since I'm going to be hunting in pretty thick stuff. Do you think the .17 would work, or be too light?

I'd say Welcome to PM, Slab! Glad to have ya!

I think your .17 is on the light side.

I'm sure you will get differing opinions here, but most agree with that.

A .223 or .17 Rem works well on cats.

ouch /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gifcats with a bow man that will be tuff they are slick and stealthy can be done though, i will agree with Barry the 17 is alittle lite for cats 223 is hard to beat for predators with ample amounts of loaded ammo on the market Ron

i use the 17 hmr not the mack 2 , it is like a 22lr. but i use my hmr17 all the time for anything from 20ft to 250 all the time, but to go out any farther you would need some thing better, i would consider the price of ammo before buying a new rifle , ammo goes up all the time , i found a howa 223 with scope for 400 dollars, (look at the post howa 223)
i buy bulk 223 military surplus for cheep , no wolf ,
but the other calibers are good if not better, go with what you can afford,, Timmy

Thanks for all the feedback. I kinda had the same thought about the .17m2 myself, but just wanted to make sure. I'll probably just use what I've got already, though I might be a little over-gunned. And thanks for the welcome. I'm glad to be here

And, yeah, I know its going to be tough with a bow, but that might be all I get to hunt with this season. But, if I can pull it off, I can't imagine a better way to hone the 'ole skills for deer seasons to come. Plus, and you can ask my huntin buddies about this, I'll be realllllly hard to live with. Thanks again

I didn't see it in any of the previous posts, I could have missed it, but don't forget the possibility of a shotgun. If the landowner don't want you using a centerfire rifle, maybe you could get by with a shotgun? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif
Good for cats and good in dense brush.

The thought did cross my mind, but my problem is that I just got stationed at Laughlin AFB, and I'm 14 hours away from home. Not sure how to get a gun down here right now, or if the landowner is going to be interested in letting me use one. Most of the last posts about using a .17m2 were on the chance that I do get to have a gun down here. But if I do, I probably would think seriously about bringing a scattergun
