New BB gun

Ordered a new Savage MKII FV in 17hm2.
Could not stand the flimsy tupperware stock so I ordered a stock replacement from Boyd's. Sanded off the factory finish on the stock then applied a TruOil finish. Replaced factory hardware with bottom plate, trigger guard, and one piece scope base from DIP. This BB gun shoots 3/8" groups at 70 yds.
In the 2013 hunting season I will be shooting squirrels from the next county.

Did you sand along the grain or across?

When sanding off the factory finish, I sanded with the grain.
I sanded with 440 wet/dry sand paper after the first coat of tru oil. (light circular wet sanding) This fills the pores in the open grain wood. After 2 wet sandings I applied 3 hand rubbed coats of truoil between very light polishing with 0000 steel wool.

That is a great looking outfit. Good luck with that, and be sure to post some good photos of the squirrels you get with it.
