Red (or green) dots are not for everybody. Pistol enthusiasts will love them. Pistol red dots allow you to do stuff you can't do with iron sights, just like red dots on ARs.
For ccw, open emitters require near daily maintenence to clear lint and dust from the lense and emitter. Closed emitters rule for ccw because they don't have that problem- they're fully enclosed. There's nothing wrong with an open emitter for range use or home use, or duty use with a hooded holster, they work great.
I've owned several different red dots (five) and shot more. What you select depends on your needs.A few of mine.
Trijicon is the Nightforce of red dots. They are extremely durable and the glass is good enough.
RMR Type-2 works great and it battle proven tough. They are expensive, and the window is a bit small. I sold mine after a year because I think other brands offer more value and better options. The new
RCR and RMR HD and seem huge and costly, but I haven't gotten my hands on one yet. I bet the RMR HD quickly becomes #1 for duty use, although I think it sits too high and the window is small.
Holosun has a bunch of models, with lots of options, reticles, and colors. The 507/8/9 series is proven tough. The
507 Competition has my eye right now and I'll probably get one once they hit the shelves... The
SCS fits mos Glocks or cut slides without needing surpressor height sights, an easy entry level choice. The green
EPS is my current favorite and I carry it every day. It just "looks" way better than other red dots I've used.
25 yards.
17 & 22 yards controlled pairs.
Red dots are not indestructable. I smashed the Hex Wasp that came on my Springfield Hellcat. It still works and holds zero, but the glass shattered after a little abuse. Stick to the big boy brands for durability.
