New bolt action rifle from T/C

T/C is getting into the bolt action business with a pretty elaborate rifle called "The Icon". They are also introducing a new caliber called the .30 T/C. There's a write up on it at www.predatorxtreme.com if you want to check it out.

Well I read some more of Ralph M. Lermayer the author of the .30 T/C articles while I was over there. It seems he thinks the .17 Remington is a necked down .223. But it really has the same parent case as the .204 Ruger the 222 Remington Magnum. Sometimes I wonder about these writers. Do they really reload or just shoot some rifles someone has told them to hype?

That's a good catch. I'll correct it. The line should read ".222 mag case necked down". You've certainly hit on the hardest part of being a writer. One single blooper can diminish the whole article. You guys keep us on our toes. And yes, I've been reloading for over 40 years.

I know it's in the magazine, don't know why it's not on the website. Its just ralph@grandviewmedia.com I try to visit this site periodically, but it's usually limited to a half hour or so on the rare Saturday morning when I can't go hunting and don't have to do ranch work.

Ralph, you are doing a fantastic job on that magazine! The absolute main thing I like is how responsive you've been to the readers, getting their input and actually using their ideas! I've learned ALOT of cutting edge info from your magazine since you took over (things like shooting from your non-dominant eye with a single shot rifle, how to set yourself anglewise to an electronic caller to get the most shooting opportunities and also great information on electronic callers and other equipment---USEFUL, HELPFUL information)! So please keep up the great work--you're definitely headed in the right winning direction! --- Mike

Thanks, Mike. To GrandView's credit, they have allowed me to make some drastic changes. My writer's have to be passionate about predator hunting first, writer's second. I'm fed up with big name writers who do all their hunting on a typewriter. We don't try to hoodwink the readers. You guys are passionate about this stuff, and to me, the readers are all guys I'd like to share a hunting camp with, even when one of them smacks me down occasionally. Finally, we try to stay on top of the rapid changes going on in this industry, to separate what's real from the baloney, and pass the word. It's a 24/7 gig for me, but I love it. I'm glad to hear it's helping you out, that's the purpose of the whole thing. Brace up for the Jan/Feb issue - it should knock your socks off!

Ralph,
Two points that caught my interest in you articles. One is the PX shift. I learnt how to do that the hard way many years ago with deer. Missing on the right side isn't a fond memory. I've taught it to many new hunters over the years, too. The second is the Savage Rifle. Shame they still kept the blind magizine. The is one of the largest drawbacks. In the east we have to unload and case our rifles between every stand when we get back to the vehicle. A drop magazine or a detatchable box would be a great help in time and with cold fingers. Also, how are the stocks contoured? The Model 11 I purchased in 2000 was the clunkiest rifle I've ever held. I've shaved inches off it with wood working tools to make it behave better in my hands. Has Savage addressed the 2"x4" issue with their stocks, yet?
Thanks, Christopher.

As a writer it is your "job" to not make rookie mistakes. Otherwise the 40 years of handloading is reduced to novice status. Gun cranks catch rookie mistakes like fire on gasoline.

Cool rifle...............any TC product I have ever owned was made very well. Is the gunworld really ready for yet another .30 cal tho ?

T/C is going to have to go some towards backing up what
they advertise, before they will see any more of my money.

I purchased a SS/Composite Encore, in a .308 Win pistol
configuration, and it sprayed everything I shot out of it
from my loading bench. So I called T/C and asked what
they shot, for their claim of Minute of Angle accuarcy.
So I head to the store, and buy factory ammo, and let
me say that hurt! It sprayed, too. To head off any
challenges, about my pistol shooting skills, let's just
say that I spent some time on a military pistol team,
and still shoot regularly.

So I send my Encore back to T/C, and they check it out,
and re-crown the barrel, and send it back to me. Now it
groups, but 2 MOA was about as good as it got, even
with some well tailored hand loads. Their position
was it met their specs. It didn't met mine.

As for efforts to accurize, I wasn't about to go through the
barrel hanger, oversized pins, shuffle so the Encore was
traded, and it will be awhile before I would ever consider a
T/C firearm again.

As for their new bolt action rifle, I am quite happy with
Tikka(killer trigger, accurate and detachable mag),
Savage(easy to switch barrels, and very accurate), and Howa
(good trigger, accurate, and resonably priced) rifles. I
didn't see anything, with all due respect to Ralph, that
would get me excited about the T/C bolt action, or the new
.30 T/C. And the point about the .308 Win, not getting a
150 gr. bullet to 3000 fps...My Chrony says otherwise. Some
of the newer faster powders have clearly made this point
debatable. If we didn't need the WSM line, as some contend,
then we clearly do not need a cartridge between a .308 Win,
and a 300 WSM. I wish T/C the best of luck with their new
introductions, because I sure do love more choices. Now
they have to find a way to win an old disappointed customer
back into the T/C fold.
