New Cabelas Optic Catalog--NF and $4k Leupold?!?!?

So I got the new Cabelas Optic Catalog today and was pleased to see they now offer NF products. The way my wife uses the Cabelas Card, I should be able to get a free one in about 18 months. The other thing that caught my eye was a $4000 Leupold Mark 8....[beeep]? I am a big Leupold fan and have several currently, but what the heck is so special about this scope. I heard some things a while back about it and the price tag, but this is unreal...I just don't see what you're getting with this thing that you could get elsewhere for way less?

IIRC, it is avalable in a couple different reticles. The fact that it is FFP and 34mm would drive the price up more than a HV reticle, no doubt......

Leupold has lost their minds on that scope, IMO. I looked at that Mark 8 yesterday at Jay's sporting goods.

I'll take a S&B and save a few $$$ over that MK8.

While the Mk 8 is a highly overpriced scope for sure the high price will be greatly magnified by Cabela's. Unless they are running some kind of sale most every optic they sell can be purchased elsewhere for considerably less money.
This scope for example can be bought for around $3500.

Got my Cabelas catalog yesterday and went straight to the $4000 Leupold, what the heck is so special about that thing, besides the fact you can submerge it down to 65 meters of water? I dont expect that model will survive long on the market.

Okay, I've heard enough of the foolishness.

Sorry, but it smacks of a bunch of guys speaking of which they truly know nothing about.

First of all, the Mark 8 was NOT developed for hunters, at all. Nor was it designed with any facet of the civilian market in mind, at all.

It just so happens that some Leupold dealers have the option of carrying the Mark 8 line, and choose to do so. I'm sure Cabelas can turn a tidy profit on one, given their prices. If they can manage to sell $4k scopes to civilians with deep pockets, more power to them. I believe i read somewhere that the military was paying $3150 for them (individually).

That said, the Mark 8 was designed as a sniper scope, but has now been adopted/engineered as a HDO (heavy day optic) for the Mark 2 heavy machine gun and Mark 19 grenade launcher.

Let me say that again. MARK 2 HEAVY MACHINE GUN and MARK 19 GRENADE LAUNCHER.

Apparently, they must work well, as Leupold has already secured military contracts for the Mark 8.

And by the way, unless someone can show me otherwise, I do not believe S&B makes a similar scope that is rated for HEAVY MACHINE GUNS. Their 1-8X24 included.......

Rant over........

If a fellow was going to shoot his heavy machine gun under 65 meters of water it would be worth what it cost no doubt. They definately did not have me in mind when they built it.I have thought though about selling some guns and just having about 2 with the best of everything. One for Sunday and one for weekdays. What would be the best of everything?

Not if your talking retail.

Not sure what you mean by "retail" but one that quickly comes to mind is SWFA. They will beat anybody's advertised price by 10%. Several others do not advertise but will beat Cabela's on anything they sell.

Evidently you've never used it... It's only 10% less of the price difference (the sale & posted SWFA price). I've done it twice & will not again. It's more trouble than it's worth to save a few pennies. I'll give my money to the vender with a good price.

As far as the MK8...??? Have at them. Heck, I think the MK4's are overpriced. I'll take a S&B anyday. Besides, I don't use my grenade launcher that much these days anyway

No sir I have never used it but my point still is that Cabela's is not the place to buy optics from unless they are running a sale.

It's just the SWFA thing is more of trap than anything. If you find a scope $40 cheaper they only beat it by $4. With the agrevation of process & having to wait for them to get back in touch with you. Not worth it. Even if it was $100+ difference. They usually do have decent prices though. Much better than Cabelas or BP.

The mark 8 is mil mil also if I am not mistaken, none of this mil moa stuff we deal with in the mark 4 s. I talked to a leupold rep and he said in a year or two there custom shop might offer a mil turret replacement to match there gmt reticle. Never have understood why manufacturers go mil moa on a scope. If someone could explain that one to me I would be most appreciative.
