New closed reed?

Kinda depends on the location as far as cottontails or jackrabbits in your area. Not saying a jackrabbit doesn’t work in Illinois without any cuz it does !
Good place to ask tho cuz there’s some excellent call makers on this site with excellent prices and a world of knowledge and in my experience ALWAYS willing to steer you in the right direction 👍

I recommend having more than one! Sometimes raspy sounds trigger. Other times high pitched sounds are the trigger. Rabbit sounds in a lot of places are used so heavily that bird sounds are more productive. Depending on the time of year, fawn distress can be your ticket to success, but even that can work at any time.

Closed reeds are great for their simplicity, but the versatility of an open reed will open up your calling tool box with more options. If you're still hung on just one tuning on a single reed, a raspy cottontail would be my suggestion. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies so far. I live in eastern Ks and I have a good open reed already. I’m just wanting the simplicity of a closed reed and I’m also not opposed to a bite style.

My favorite is raspy Jack which can also be blown like a fawn distress. My bite reeds usually end up in the raspy cottontail department sound wise and are awesome but not as loud as a good closed reed.
