It took 4 years and more money than I will ever admit... But its done! My new .458 Win Mag. Its built on an old FN Mauser Action. It has a B&C medalist stock, NECG sights, Leupold Rings and Scope and a Bold Trigger.... Piggies Be ware,

Oh fun! Boomers are fun....for a while! Ouch!

My Ruger Number 1 .458 with a 4X Leupold could cloverleaf 3 shots at 100 yards when- here it comes!- I did my part. Trouble was, it was hard to concentrate on that trigger when you knew that you were getting ready to be walloped. My PAST recoil shield and a soft pistol case behind the butt helped a lot.

When I loaded it down with 17 grains of Unique and a lead 400 grain gas checked bullet it was whole lot more tolerable. Even shot some ground squirrels with it just for fun. Fun for me- not the squirrels. Never needed a follow up shot I can tell you that.

No longer have that .458 (all the elephants and cape buffalo are long gone in this part of Idaho) but it was fun for a while. I hope that you enjoy yours!

Im Young and Dumb enough that I will! i will say this the ruger #1 always seem to kick harder than their bolt cousins in the same calibers... Idk if its because the ruger's dont fit me as well well or what, but at least you have grizzly bears in Idaho, We don't have anything that justifies this kind of fire power in Indiana.

I have a Ruger No. 1 in .458. The biggest thing it’s shot was a 200# wild pig sow. Not much obvious damage as the pig was facing me and I shot it with a 450gr Swift Aframe Remington factory load. Didn’t make a point of trying to recover the slug.

At 66, Im tiring of heavy recoil and try to remember to use the PAST recoil shield.

Accurate gun and has an outstanding trigger. Don

That's a fine looking rifle for sure. The .458 is a kicker from what I have heard. I have never shot one but I take everyone's word for it.

I have shot my son's CZ 375 H&H, which is not bad at all. Actually, the felt recoil is less than my .338 Win Mag. The 375 is so accurate that I suggested when he first got it a few years ago, that we take it groundhog hunting just for the fun of it. My son was first man on the gun and took a groundhog at 116 yards. I even got the shot on video. It was classic.

Now, go have some fun with that big boomer.

Looks like a well thought out and executed rifle, there. I might have gone pic rail so I could switch to the IR scope for nocturnal pigs, though. Strong work. Congratulations.

Years ago, a couple brothers who were successful coyote hunters invited me to go along. All I had at that time was the .458. I only got one shot at a yodel dog, it was hauling tail away from me. Missed. When we were leaving, decided to take my frustration out on a jackrabbit. Didn’t leave much. The groundhog must have been a mess as well. Don

Let's just say the groundhog got excited and kind-of lost his head.

Having shot a .458 recoil, is mild compared to the little short barrel NEF 3 1/2" shotgun that I had. It weighed around 5 pounds. Back when the 3 1/2" came out some gun rag did a test and found the recoil was greater than alot of the magnum caliber rifles.

Sure a lot of difference when sitting at a bench trying to shoot a group or standing up where your body can roll with the recoil. When I shot my .458 flatfooted it was easier on me than shooting 3" turkey loads though my Wingmaster. Scrunched over a shooting bench, that's a whole different story.

Well, beins I'm Gumboot 458 . I gotta say something. .
That rifle looks great. I've had a bunch of 458 Win Mags. Killed tons and tons of animals with them. . With modern bullets it's a very viable all around rifle. . . IMO it is a rifle that you need to be on best terms with as far as working the rifle. If you plan on hunting heavy and dangerous game with it. .
Along that line, I hope you reload for it. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also Lee dies with the Lee factory crimp die are the hands down best for it.
Buy as much Accurate 2230 powder as you can.

And the Berry's 350 gr Round Shouldered plated bullets. . They make the best blasting bullets I have ever used. And they work great for a lot of hunting also. The Lee factory crimp die will really help getting the correct crimp without giving a ripple neck.
You will find that a 350 gr bullet at 2550+ fps is funner to shoot than a 500 gr bullet @2150 fps. And at 2400 its quite mild but with enough boot to make blasting very realistic. . You can hunt that bullet also.
What loads are you thinking to hunt buff.with?

Also, you did very good on the scope. The eye piece doesn't much protrude behind the cocking piece. . Something I insist on with my large bores.
