Hey guys,

I am totally new to predator hunting (not hunting, just predators). I just moved to Safford, AZ. I do have an electronic call and I will be headed out this week in the Rhino to hunt in the evenings in the Safford area. If you know the area, I am about 5-6 miles south of town off of 191. Last night, my wife was awaken at about 1am from a pack of Coyotes hunting something back behind out house. I am thinking of heading up 366 to that little dirt road that heads up into Coronado Forrest on the right about 2 miles past the Federal Prison. ANy input or advice on where to go?

Alot of great calling along 191, from safford all the way down to the I10. Call either side left or right. If you find a great spot wait for me.

I have one if I did not live in a development! They were out in force last night up until the moment. I would bet they were no more than 100 yards from my back fence! It's a bit hard for me as we have twins, 2, 2 year old identical girls, so getting out is not as easy as it sounds, but one day this week for sure.

You guys are welcome to head up this way. I just moved here, but from what everyone says, this town has grown up a ton in the last few years due to the mines...

Unknown is Tyler H. His dad wont let him out alone so I must go with him. Safford, here we come!

Take a roadtrip. Plenty of coyotes to go around here! I'd say they are becoming a nuisance...

Welcome to Safford. Its not real good for calling close to town there are yotes but they are very call shy.try to get away from town and you will do better that said if you have a house cat in distress call they work well close to town.We have calling contests sometimes around jan good way to meet everybody that calls.Lex

I bet there will be tons of "predators" inside there to shoot. sorry, bad joke. good luck and take pics

Ok, looks like we are planning a road trip somtime in the future to Safford, since Scott said he would pay for the gas.

Welcome SaffordHunter,

I live in Safford as well. I often think I need to find a good hunting buddy to cover my blind spots. I'm pretty new to predator calling - got really into it last year when I didn't draw any big game tags. Called and killed my first solo coyotes and a bobcat. This year I have a deer and an elk tag, so my calling will be limited until December or so. Anyway, you're in the right place. I've been on this site around a year, but don't post much. You can learn a whole lot by reading, though. This week won't work for me, but keep me in mind if you ever need a partner. Thanks,

Garrett

After all that, I forgot to answer your questions. I've called that road you mentioned last year - no success, but I know there are coyotes in the area. I think many of them are probably call-shy due to their proximity to town. I've had more luck the farther I get away from Safford proper. I know the coyotes are right in town, but don't know how to get at them. Hope that helps. If you're willing to walk, the foothills of Graham just outside town may produce some good results if you can get away from the heavily-travelled areas.

Thanks for the feedback guys. With what I have heard, I will give that spot a try, but I wont spend too much time out there. If it does not pan out, I will head out to the south end of Stockton rd, make a left and head out towards the dunes and try a spot out there...I'll let you guys know how I do and the more the merrier out there, it's wide open country....

There are no coyotes in AZ, they all left to CA where they roam carefree.... I'm willing to buy your gear off you so you are not out of pocket...

Either way, welcome to PM!

Geeezzz guys! I thought I was the only one who ever hunted the Safford area. What a place. We have had 4 packs going at once down there in one evening, however, the FIRST thing I noticed was that WHEN you get on them? and they know it? the game is over for ALL the packs in the neighborhood. They are just plain hunted hard and are pretty smart about being hunted - as coyotes go. Doesn't stop us from trying them on for size every winter though.

Have fun thinning them out new guy. Maybe you have a technique, or call style, they have never heard before. You get it figured out? take it to the grave with you!!!!

They ARE there in large numbers though and maybe you can get-er-done............................................

My two buddie and I try to make it up you way about 3 times a year because the yotes seem to dumb compared to down around the valley here. We will average about 8 to 10 stands a day on a weekend and have only been skunked on twice on a stand in the last 3 years. We either get a yote/fox/or bobcat on each stand. Down here we average about 1 out of ever 4 to 5 stands. You have some great area up there, try expanding you area you hunt by about 15-20 miles away from Safford and there are dogs around every corner, well it seems like it anyway. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif The first time up in you area we were heading down the road in the dark before the sun came up and actually ran over a jack being chased by a yote on the road. We set up about 1/4 mile away and called in a yote, don't know if it was the same one chasing the jack but who care right. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I worked at the FT.Grant Industrial School many years ago before it was a prison.
There are lots of Coyotes and bobcat along the the mountain from East to West down to Arivapa. I called and ran a trap line there for a year. That was my most productive area I have ever been in. I would love to hunt it again. Times change of course, and I know there has been lots of development, but compared to where I live now,...there has to be more area because of State lands.
Good hunting.
