New Mexico Hunt

I will be in Albequerque next for about 10 days and plan to meet up with a buddy of mine to shoot some geese. I have asked him if he has any land that we can call and shoot some coyotes on and he is checking.

I want to make sure that I have everything and that I am legal.

I think that the license to hunt coyotes is $50 furbearer/non-trapping.

Can I hunt with an AR and how many rounds are you allowed in the magazine while hunting?

can I hunt with my E caller?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Would anyone be interested in a swap hunt?
Deer hunting in Central AL or fishing on the intercoastals along the mobile and perdido bays.\
Swap for a coyote hunt within an hour or so of Albequerque.

Thanks for the post but I have already looked at it.

I see that there is no closed season for hunting them. I found coyotes mentioned under furbearers but very little information about hunting them. Can I use an AR and do I need a 5 rd mag or is a 10 ok? I see that I can use an e-caller as well.

Please help if anyone knows more about this.

dpowers, you are correct in that you need the $50 license. However, if you buy the required small game license for geese (don't forget the duck stamp) you will be covered for coyotes as long as you don't keep the fur. The regulations state that a non-res must have the non-res, non-game or ANY other NM license. The small game you will buy for goose hunting cover you. Buy the Habitat Stamp ($5) and you can hunt BLM and Forest Service land. You can get the NM Gazateer that shows public land available for hunting. You might also touch base with centerfire_223 on this board. He was out last month and did some calling around Albuquerque. I bet he can point you in the right direction, one southern boy to another. If you get to the southern part of the state, shoot me a PM and we'll go call in the desert.

Edit - you can hunt with an AR. There's no mag restriction that I'm aware of, so hunt with your 100-round drum if you want! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif There is no season on coyote. Unless you buy the furbearer license though you can't shoot bobcat or fox, which have a season (started Oct 14 I think).

dpowers, I would love to swap a hunt with you. I live in Albuquerque and have a number of public land locations that have yielded some fresh yote kills. I put centerfire 223 on some yotes when he was here. The only problem is timing. Not sure when you will be here but my schedule is this weekend I will be on a pheasant hunt in the mid-west, next weekend I will be in Texas on a whitetail hunt and I leave on November 3rd for a week or 10 days in Colorado hunting elk. If you will be here during the time I am gone give me a call and I can point you in the right direction. Or even if we can meet here in town for lunch or dinner I can mark a map for you. 405-641-1779 cell or 505-833-1746 office.

If it works where I can take you I would be more than happy to show you around.

Good luck

Rick

Thank all of you for the information. If it works out I have about 4-5000 acres to hunt whitetail on in Central and West AL. Maybe you can come and join me.

This is one of the great things about PM, we can almost always have a common interest with someone nomatter where we are.

I would like to thank Desertram and Okie Hunter for all of their help and advice on hunts in New Mexico. Okie put me on some BLM land that was easy to get to and was really beautiful country. He was nice enough to meet with me and had maps xeroxed and laid out for me.

I did not see any yotes but I did see some great country and get some great pictures.

Thanks for all of the help. If you are ever in AL look me up and I will put you on some deer or at least buy you a cold one.

I believe Desert Ram is correct. You can hunt coyotes which are not protected fur bearers in NM with any current hunting license. Get your duck stamp and license and Blast all the coyotes you want to. The fur bearer license is for Bobcat, coon, fox, etc.

Have a good time and make some fur and feathers fly! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I'm sure glad you had a good time out here. Too bad you didn't make it down south. I sure would have liked to sneak in a hunt with ya.

Ronnie's trying to drag us out for a turkey hunt in the spring, so who knows...

I might just line up a time in the next year to get out there and visit with family and get in a few days of hunting. I will sure give you guys a call.

Time was short so I was only able to get out and hunt one day.

Rem shooter, thanks for the info.

Here are some pics from my hunt. Sorry, no yotes in these but I had a great hunt and took a bit of a nap on a sunny slope.
