New Mexico Non residents

caller4hire,

Cougar tags for non resident is 210.00 there are some regulations with the tags. You can visit the NM game and fish website for details.

Starting in 2005 the rules are changing on cougar hunting they will benifit predator callers more. The game comission wants to try to get the number of cougars down to help the mule deer and bighorns.

For yotes a non game license is required for non residents the cost is 50.00. The proclamation also states that to hunt nongame nonresidents must have a nongame or any current NM non resident hunting license. So it looks like a cougar tag would work for both. For furbearers it is 300.00 dollars for non res. ouch.

Incidentally, you only need the furbearer license if you want to trap furbearers, shoot protected furbearers like fox or bobcats (coyotes are unprotected), or keep any fur. If you shoot and leave coyotes, you're good to go with any non-resident game license or a non-resident non-game as mentioned above.

DesertRam, are you saying that a non-resident must have a furbearer license to keep a coyote fur?

What if a non-resident wanted to keep a coyote head or body to have mounted?

I am new to New Mexico and have killed a few, however not keep any, yet. I was thinking about having a head mounted just for a conversation peace for my office.

What about contest? Can I kill em and take them in or am I out of luck?

Thanks for helping out with my questions guys.

As I interpret the regs, a non-resident may not collect fur (of even a non-protected furbearer) without the furbearers license. I can't see them trying real hard to enforce this with coyotes, but if you got pulled over by a Game Warden with a truck load of coyotes, he could probably nail you.

Take heart though, you're considered a resident for hunting purposes once you've lived in the state for 90 days.
