Anybody had a chance to shoot and handle one, what were your thoughts?

You dont need a scoop- you need a shovel! The one on top is more ugly than Hillary Clinton and Janet Reno put together! Arrrrrrg! My eyes! My eyes! I'm blind! I'M BLIND! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

when you pot pressure on the end of a bad barrel it shoots better, thats what that "soup can" does. I got on the mini rage years ago, ended up with 2 that wouldn't shoot, spent alot of money putting good barrels on them now they will shoot with my AR's but I could have bought 4 good AR's or 2 Les Baers for the money I have in them.

i am a big mini 14 fan, i handled the the all weather version, and felt it was way muzzle heavy for an assault rifle. the accuracy is supposed tho be around an inch, one mag reported 1.5. check out the gun mags of summer 2007. i felt with marginal accuracy and excess weight, i had no use for the rifle. i like my mini because it is a tough reliable gun, i have another rifle for accurate shooting.

I don't know what you're looking at but I see it as a vision of lovliness! I guess beauty truly is in the eyes of the beerholder.

You know what they say,,"Poop's good if ya like it". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

"Beauty is in the eyes of the Beerholder".
No more beer for you!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I really like the way the top pic looks. But as you can tell from lots of guys the mini is far inferior to the AR in accuracy and feel in the hands. Go with an AR you'll not be dissapointed.

Looks great to me. If you want something that is minute of coyote and goes bang every time you pull the trigger then get one. I wonder how anyone killed anything back in the day when hunting rifles were not sniper rifles. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif They are kind of like that gal in a pony tail and jeans that would go fishing with you and keep you warm when the night starts to get chilly. Or you could go with that gal who has to be wined and dined every night. Did I just call black guns high maintenance? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Where is some popcorn, this should be good. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

There was a time when you could not have given me two AR-15 rifles for a Mini 14. I thot that everything that Ruger makes is wonderful. And most of it was. Most still is. Bill Ruger rates right up there with Browning, Colt, Garand, Stoner and Kalashnikov. His 1st 22 semi autos are going on 60 years old, and with little changes are still going very strong indeed. I shot an old red eagle gripped Mark 1 a few year ago. What a delight and what a fine shooter it was too. Shot like a Ruger. What can I say? Back in the 70's the AR's started to arive in the states. We hear the battle field failues in Vietnam. Shoot a man 10 times and he keeps coming with a machette to hack you to death. Tiny bullets went right though and black pajama boys kept coming. The jamming, the sorry ammo. no! NO! I dont want one of those! Get them away from me! Col Cooper says they is "Mattell Toys" and he aughta know!

Then, here comes the soldier home. Thy see a AR-15 and he picks it up loveingly. He may look up at someone and say something about this gun saving his life. Or all of the scrapes that it got him out of. Never left him down. Loves his gun. Ah! What the heck does he know? Elmer and the Col hate them! That good enough for me. At least the Mini 14 LOOKS like a battle rife BY GOD! Scaled down a bit maybe.

Thirty years later and what happended??? What happened to me?? I got two AR guns and want more. I have simple built varmint setup that will run a TWENTY round magazine into an 1" hole at 100 yards. Hand it off to a friend and he does it too. Does better than me even and it is the rirst time he has even fired the weapon. Few months earlier than that I was spotting for Billy Goodman as he tagged 500+ yard praire dogs with his in the Wyoming dessert. WW whitebox to boot. What about all the bad stuff I had heard about this rifle? How could it shoot this well? I thought it was JUNK!

Well, it aint junk. Far from it. Stick a good barrel on it, a trigger in it, a nice clear scope on it and get after it. That's what I did and ever since have began amazing people with that black rifle. Including me. Oh, and no jams. Easy to take apart and clean. This is One Fine Shooting Rifle!

Col Cooper, Sir? You were right about a lot of things. I got one of them there Colt 1911's in God's own caliber yessir I did. Fourteefive Ayeceepee. And yessir- you was right. It a fine weapon. But Sir? Colonel Cooper Sir? I think you may want to give another looksie at this here rifle, Colonel. My buddy Billy is busting praire dogs at around 500 yards with it, Sir. Dont you think that maybe that Stoner feller knew what he was doing after all, Colonel? Maybe we give them another look, what say, Sir? Can I pull you up a chair, Sir? I have a buddy here that wants to show you something. BillY? The Colonel is ready. Fire at will.

Every time I hear about all the problems with the early military ARs I just shake my head. I carried one for 15 months in South Vietnam, one of the earliest versions an XM16E1, it functioned flawlessly. I never heard of a single complaint from anybody in my company, or even in my battalion.

That was a good read, Rusty! I used to read all those horror stories myself about those AR rifles. Even passed up a few good deals on some because of some of the bad things that I had read about them. It seems that gun writers are a funny lot. They will pass over thousands of reports of success just to point out (with great detail) one failure.

I think what you wrote just pushed me over the top. Now- the question is, do I build me one or buy one ready to go? Is there a price difference? Does one shoot better than the other? Any suggestions? Anybody?
