new to 223 rem. reloading

Was at the local gander mountain and they had a huge sale on all of their reloading equipment. Well, this is my second year shooting my 223 (my 270 is getting a little expensive even with reloads). So I picked up a box of the 50 gr. Speer TNT bullets. And a box of the 55 gr. Soft point varmint bullets. I'll be using IMR 3031. Does anybody have any exp. With this setup and what grains of powder do you use. I see 23.2 is "the best" but I learned from reloading all of the ammo in the house, the best is usually not the best. What works for you guys/gals? And if you do shoot them, how is the expansion? Thanks everybody.

go ahead and get you a pound of H335 and a pound of Benchmark.....and i would say you will have a pretty good chance of sticking with one of these two powders

I agree with that. I think 3031 is a bit on the slow side for this application and I would recommend Benchmark also. Nothing wrong with H335 either.

You don't mention rifle, twist, or intended target and distance. I did some early load testing with 3031 in my AR, but the ball powders all shot better as did the ballistic tips.

Its a Rossi 223MB. 1:12 twist. I deer hunt with it. But am now getting into varmint. With Winchester white box varmint factory stuff, it'll hold about an inch at 100 meters. I just hate shooting factory ammo. I will be shooting about 200 meters or so.

I reload for the .223; buy a can of Ramshot Xterminator, or Accurate Arms 2230. These powders burn very clean, not temperature sensitive, very accurate, and meter very well (both are ball powders).

I seconf H335 and benchmark . I use H335 out of the CZ and becnchmarl for the mid weight AR loads and the 6x45

23 gr H335 + 69 gr Match King - one hole 5 rds 100yds

Just to muddy up the waters I have been having excellent results with TAC and 60 gr. V-Max and 65 gr. Sierra GameKings. I know you are using 55 grain bullets but think TAC will work well there too.

With having a 1:12 barrel, I'm best using 55 gr. Or less to keep it stable, and keep my velocity. I had a buddy shooting reloaded ss109 penetrator rounds, and it wasn't accurate for anything. And that's 62 grain. I find 45-55 is what my gun loves. I use 4895. For my -06 and love it..... And think I may have a pound downstairs....

Redneck:

4895 is a good all-around powder for the .223....I didn't read that you mentioned having that one in your earlier posts on this thread..

Shoot that can up before you buy anything else....there's a recession going on!

IF you are buying bullets for the .223, treat yourself to some Speer 52 gr. HPs and Sierra 40 gr. HPs.

I don't give out powder quantities on the internet...that's YOUR job to decide!!

Just review 3-4 manuals that list the powder/weight bullet you prefer and and work up.

That's what I said. As for powder charges, I already know what I'm going to start out at. And with how cheap the bullets were, just gonna start low and work up. Thnx

No one has mentioned Varget. I like it for the 55 grn bullets because it has a very high velocity and low pressure. Also use Bechmark with very good success.
