New to Coyote hunting and need help/guide Elgin, IL area

So I posted something similar in another area on this site but got no hits. But anyway I am looking for an experienced hunter in my area (Elgin, IL), or within about 2 hours of me to pick his brain learn to use hand calls and possibly go out on a hunt or two for the experience. I do have most of the gear I think I need for the hunt.
Current gear
ruger 10/22 aftermarket adjustable stock, nikon 22lr bdc 3x9 scope, bipod, 2lb trigger pull
hunting bow
skinning knife
range finder
hunting pack that also can carry bow or rifle
4-5 mouth calls
binoculars
descenting supplies
winter ghillie suit

I think thats the basics for now. I am prior military with training to hit moving targets up to 800 yrds away. Also from anyone in Illinois looking for suggestions to purchase either a larger caliber rifle or a shotgun because of our regulations. Only reason I bought a 22lr and modified it was because thats what we can use in most public hunting grounds as well as the bow. Look forward to the help.

And I completely agree that you should have a bigger caliber then the 22lr but in Illinois on public hunting grounds you can only use a shotgun, bow or a 22 rimfire for coyote most sites it 22 only. If I could find private property to hunt on I will buy a larger rifle.

That is some typical chicago influenced BS of Illinois. I think youre better off with the shotgun when you can and with the 22lr I would be sure they are darn close and shoot for the head.

Would the .17 Hornet..17 Remington (Center fires) or the .17 HMR,or the newer .17 WSM (B-Mag) (Rim Fires) be allowed where You hunt in Illinois?

The public places within 3-4 hours of me specify 22 rimfire so thats 22lr and 22 mag. I have asked about the 17hmr at some places but most of them say even though its smaller then the 22 rimfire it has more distance and thats the issue or they cant give me an answer why I cant use it. Thats why I am trying to find private property where the state rules apply and I can use any caliber to taken them down. I have ads up on some sites asking for anyone with a yote issue to allow me to come in and clear em out.

Jim Edgar State Park only allows shotgun coyote hunting during the day. At night, you can use rim fire, until coon season is over. Recently went there with my 22mag, and talked to the site manager. He said it is shotgun only during the day.

Ya I have seen alot of sites that will allow you to use shotgun. Unfortunately I dont own a shotgun and honestly the only experience I have with a shotgun is blowing locks off doors for breaching and room clearing and not sure if my local range allows shotguns for practice. I would really have to brush up on shotguns to be comfortable to hunt with and to know what to buy.

I hunt your area a couple times a year. As briefly as possible here are some things that work for me in that area. Forget the public ground until you get a better feel for this. Somehow get permission to hunt along the Sangamon river bottoms or any private property for that matter especially if they have cows. I do most of my killing around there with a shotgun and #4 buck. Boring,I know but it is all you need. Be able to reproduce the sounds of a dying rabbit, fawn distress, and an injured coyote and you are in the game. At one time or another we all started green too. Hang in there and leave all that other stuff in the truck so you can cover more ground. PM me I will try and help as much as I can.

See thats my problem for almost a year I have been trying to access private property for almost a year with no luck. Ill keep knocking on doors and posting ads till I get a hit. Maybe I will take up a shotgun. There is a gun show tomorrow 2/8/15 at the kane county fair grounds. Ill see if anything speaks to me.

so went in to the gun show today to pick up a shotgun but couldnt decide between a semi auto or a pump. They had some cheap pumps all the way down to 250 but didnt know what one was better to use for coyote hunting. Either way I found a Mossberg MVP 5.56/.223 with 4x16 scope and bipod with 3 magazines for $550 And couldnt turn down the price with the added goodies. I was gonna get a .223 AR-15 at some point but I like this for .223 better. Ill have to go back next month and grab a shotgun once I know more of what I am looking for. Now just need to find property to use it on.

For a shotgun I would get a pump if you don't have a bunch of money to spend. A budget semi-auto will likely have issues cycling at times. A pump shotgun at the price of a budget semi-auto will run well and work great. i would look into a 12 gauge that takes 3-3 1/2 inch shells. Practice with a shotgun is not necessary, point and shoot.

lol. if only it was that easy. i know several guys that cant hit a running coyote with a shotgun even if their life depended on it.

In my experience nothing is point and shoot. I know I have no experience shooting a shotgun passed 15 feet. And last time I shot one was 5 years ago. Anyway Ill look at shotguns next month when the show comes back.

the way i shoot a shotgun is point and shoot. but getting good at hitting what i pointed at didnt happen overnight. that is what i was getting at. it does take some practice.
