New to EC....Refurb Shockwave...Background noise

Hey all. I'm not new to hunting but very new to Electronic calls... I recently purchased a refurb Shockwave from Cabelas. Couldn't pass up $350...and now I see they're $399.00. Anyway. I was tinkering around with the caller and noticed that on every sound, there is feedback or background noise like you're listening to someone record it with a microphone. Is this normal for e-callers?
Also....is there a certain order to turn this thing on with the remote? Most of the time when I turn it on, nothing happens when I press play. It's like the Shockwave locks up.

Not normal on good e-calls. Afa turning it on, I pretty much always turn on the unit when I set it out, then the remote, but I don't think it should matter. Sounds like you might need to try out the warranty. I'm thinking refurbs have a 1 yr warranty.

You say nothing happens when you push play. Are you actually selecting the sound that you want to play first? Hard to tell exactly what you are doing with what you posted.

I turn the caller on and then the remote. Say I select to play Coyote Locator. Nothing happens. I fumble with the volume, nothing happens. I hit every freakin button on both the remote and the unit. Nothing happens. The only 2 times it has seemed to come to life is when I have selected a FoxCast sound and it'll play crows, and then the caller will work. That doesn't happen every time though. It's almost like a bad glitch; and VERY irritating. Whenever the caller has worked (the 2 times), the screen has gone red. However most of the time, it just stays as the label screen (FOXPRO High Performance Game Calls, Firmware V.1.8, Copyright FoxPro Inc.)

I will in the AM. I think I have dialed it down to an initialization problem with the Shockwave itself. Upon turning it on, it never boots up and shows the red screen. Just stays on the home screen. If I remove the batteries, then it has worked a couple of times, but who wants to do that every time just to get the thing working. I don't know if it's just the battery cartridge or something wrong with the caller itself. Funny thing is that they send a little form with it to say it has been inspected... The first time I turned it on, it didn't work right. Wonder who it was inspected by.

When you turn the remote on if you don't hold the button down for a few seconds and let off once it lights up and comes to the first screen the remote will light up but not let you do anything until you take the batteries out and reset.

I'll try that. The remote seems to work fine when the caller works. There's an entirely new dilema now though. ALL of my personal documents on my computer are gone! My pictures of my kids, family videos, etc. Gone!!! This happened after I had tried to download the firmware update as the Foxpro Download program. I have many Foxpro photos and weird JPegs on my computer now. I think that one of 2 thinga happened. Whoever had this caller before me had a virus on their computer. Foxpro or Cabelas never cleared the data and walla, it gets on my computer and wipes everything out....or 2, There was a virus embeded in the Foxpro program. Either way, they'll definitely be getting a call from me.

I tbought I would also mention that it is the Shockwave that doesn't light up; not the remote. The remote seems to work fine. The Shockwave just stalls and remains in the Main screen. It never displays the calls or anything being played.

Doesn't Cabelas have a dog in n this fight??

Why would they have a "refurbished" unit??

Never have liked or shopped at Cabelas, never buy refurbished open boxed electronics....... Ever!

This "refurbished" checklist has the logo of Foxpro on it. My guess. Foxpro gets their returns. Fixes whatever needs a fixin, and sells it as a refurb or sends it back to Cabelas to sell. Also has RFB melted into the bottom. Like I said before. I got this at a pretty good deal I think. $400 out the door. I may take it back and just spend the additional $250 for a brand new one. Likely, I'll end up getting the Fusion then. It's basically a Shockwave once you add the SP-60.

Look into the Revolution e-caller from m Lucky Duck!

We killed 10 coyotes this weekend and 15 two weeks ago with this caller.

FoxPro is a great bet also - try allpredatorcalls.com

I'm goimg to take the Shockwave back to Cabelas in the morning and get a brand new Fusion. It'll be another $130ish; but with their rebate on the bag and more versatility with the Fusion, I think it'll be a better deal. That and a longer warranty. Thanks for y'alls help though. Now once my Wilson Combat barrel comes in, I'll be able to start puttin down some fury critters.

I had some issues with my Shockwave till I used the lithium battery pack and now it runs like a champ. I must have had a few bad cells in my NiMH's. It may be as simple as batteries.

Cheers!!
