First let me say that I really like this site, lots of good info and entertaining reading here.

I work on a farm raising pheasants and turkeys and part of my job is to keep the predator numbers in check for obvious reasons. I'm gonna try to hunt fox and coon(no yotes in my part of the state yet) since they are getting wise to the traps. I have a basic plan of action in my head that I would like to run by you guys and see what you think.

1-get a cheap boom box with woodpecker, coon fight, and baby cottontail tapes. Do I really need to spend $150+ on an ecaller?
2-get a red lens for my 2 million candlepower(too much?) spotlight and possibly another light that would be easier to hold and aim my gun at the same time( any suggetions) since I will be mostly be hunting alone
3- sit the boombox on my jeep hood, play woodpecker tape for about 10 min, then switch to coon fight or cottontail(fox) while scanning the ground and trees w/light from the time I push play till I push stop

From what I gather, this is roughly the way to do it?

Thanks for any replies

First off, welcome to the board.

When I started out I did the boombox thing...It worked alright. In my experience light doesnt affect grays or coons, so 2 million cp spotlight should also be fine. When playing the tape, be sure to have it close to you so the animal looks for the sound in YOUR direction so the light picks the eyes up. OH YEAH, Make sure it is legal to use artificial light in your state.

If you start to do any dayhunting, Im sure that you will start looking at the e-callers as they are lighter and easier to hide and the digital callers have so much more to offer.

Also, here is an excellent writeup by Randy Watson, http://www.predatormastersforums.com/nighthunting.html

Good Luck.
