I have been reading this small game forum so I am dying to go squirrel hunting. I really dont want to start shooting squirrels until they are good and safe to eat. I have heard about wolves & worms when will these go away?
I live in middle TN so season is open but it has not come close to frosting yet.
Thanks

You can eat them now as far as the wolves go I read that they do not harm the meat but....I always threw the ones i killed away i quit hunting them a few years ago but before that i can only remember one year the wolves were bad and that was out of six two would have them (average)...trapperdoc

Hit the woods Caleb, you are missing out on a fine time with them cutting oaks, beech, dogwood, and poplar now. I haven't killed any with wolves this season although I have in the past. The 'wolf' is just a bot fly larva that lives in the subcutaneous tissue. It is removed during the skinning process. What sort of firearm you going to use? Nothing like a good .22 for hunting squirrels. TTT

I have a m69 22 trainer & 22 henry short carbine, either will work fine.
I am planning on finding a 16" CZ 452 american to squirrel hunt with but after seeing your 10 22 it make s me want another one.
Well thats it I am going squirrel hunting Sat.
Hey TnTnTn what part of middle Tn are in?

Just right down the road from you-I bought the sporterized Swede from you a few months ago. I have used a lot of .22s over the years and it takes a good one to hold squirrel head accuracy consistently. I use subsonic hollowpoints(Remington because they are cheaper) for squirrel hunting. My 10/22 is a super squirrel rifle because of the modifications. It wasn't accurate enough before to suit me. TTT

I went squirrel hunting today in some nice hardwoods.
I was quiet but all I saw was a possum. I may need to find an old pro to show me the ropes.

I dearly love squirrel hunting. Didn't get to do alot this season but I have a month yet. I use a CZ 452 Ultra Lux. A little on the heavy side but any squirrel inside 75 yards is in a world of hurt. I have never heard of "wolves" in squirrels. Maybe we don't have this in Illinois or they call it something else.

I have been hunting squirrels for 40 years. I have killed them in every month from August through Februrary. You can find wolves in squirrels anytime. The old wives tail says that a couple frosts will kill the worm. This is simply not true. I have found wolves in squirrels neck and shoulders in the middle of January after there have been dozens of hard freezes. Folks say that the wolves don't hurt the meat and they are safe to eat. Well not me. I get grossed out when I see the black worm in the squirrel and just leave them for the rats or whatever to eat.
Don't let the wives tails keep you from hunting squirrels. Squirrel hunting with a rimfire will sharpen your skills as a hunter and rifleman as well or better than any other type shooting.

I've eaten & skinned squirrels all my life. (50+yrs.)This is the 1st & only time I have ever heard of them having wolves, much less ever seen one. There ain't no way in **** I would even think of eating a wormy critter! (cut it out, my hind leg!) I don't eat pan fish late in the summer because they will sometimes get wormy. For anyone who may not have seen wormy fish, if the fish has been filleted, the flesh will have tiny little white balls in it. If you lightly press the tip of a knife into the ball, the worm will come wiggling out. DISGUSTING! I have never been that hungry and I hope I never am!!!-----Ben Jimmy

I cant bring myself to eat one that I have found a worm in its neck. I do love squireel hunting and especially with a 36 cal smoke pole.

Ben Jimmy, frying kills the worms in the fish. The fish still tastes the same, the flour hides them, frying kills them - a fish dinner is a fish dinner. Heck I'm still alive

Wormy fish is wormy fish & I don't eat worms. Not fried, not dead, not battered & cooked, nor alive & wiggling. It ranks right up there with a fresh, steaming, fried, cow pie & I don't eat cow poop either. But, if you like them, knock yourself out. I'm so nice & kind, you can have mine.

Here's a tip for you, not all fish dinners are created equal.----Ben Jimmy

lol.. funny what turns people "off". I agree with Roy.. Fish parasites: once you bread and fry them you'll never know they're there.

That said, I have seen whitefish in Canada so shot full of worms you couldn't tell where the fillet started and the worms end. Those, I pass on.

We are lucky not to have wolves here. I've only ever seen one in my life and that was on a dog. I do understand cattle will get them occasionally. Now - If I understand right - they don't affect the meat and come off with the hide - so - I'd have no problem eating an affected squirrel. Us poor people have poor ways.
