Newbie advice needed. (Coyotes running power lines?)

THis will be my first year coyote hunting here in south central PA. During deer season we saw very few deer and each member of our hunting party passed up on each of them due to their scarcity. When we got our first snow we did observed a set of deer tracks in the snow with dog tracks mixed in with them...Sooo it seems that its time to go yote hunting.. My question is this: On our property there is a power line that runs through it. THe line is approximatley 40-50 yards wide and is covered in laurel and small trees. The power company keep everyting low. Do yotes run a power line looking for rabbits etc. My thoughts for a stand were to sit in a tree stand in the woods with my called out on the powerline...This is on top of a mountain so the lines seem to run forever. Any help would be great..

As for weapons I'll be using my Remington 870 with an Undertaker tube and #2 lead shot. I may also use a 223 if it turns out I'll need the range.

Any help or advice would be great.

That sounds like it should work. I've never hunted terrain like that but give it a try and give us a report. Coyotes can teach you a lot. I get schooled everytime I go out... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I've often seen coyotes running the field edges, road edges and draw edges hunting. Can't imagine them not running a power lone edge.

Edges are a great place to hunt any local game... Or predators. Edges can also be a change in cover type, like a thicket in big woods.

YEP, they will (and DO) run powerlines. MOST of the coyotes I have killed here were called into a powerline cut. 'Course....we have very few fields to call them into.

#2 as in birdshot? If so, then plan on them getting away. Smallest size shot I would use on coyote is BB. Et even useing BB shot. I'd be prepared to keep on hammering away on one quickly. As they can often take a severe pounding & keep on going.

Animals like running edges. They also like coming as quietly as possible. Power lines offer both. I would heavily target these locations. I wouldn't go right on the edge though. I'd go downwind into the timber running the edges as far as you can to where you can still see the the edges, but not past 30 yards. Good luck!
