Night Times??

My ideal night,is cloudy, with a New Moon, not full, overhead,or underfoot, with a slight wind from N.W.with a rain or snow headed our way.But many nights, they will turn it on,or shut it off, just as fast. You just need to be out there when they do.Another thing I like to see is a lot of house cats along the road ditches hunting. One thing I don't like to see is deer bedded down.I've coon hunted for years and have spent 100's of hours out after dark, all year long.I think moon phase and position, are a major factor in animal movements. When you catch a good night, you had better stay with it,an pour the coffee in ya,because the 'magical night' doesn't come around all that often.

right on bgtme!!! there must have been a study done somewhere as to when they are most active or inactive. hope some one has some incite.

The only really "best" times to night hunt is when you are calling and you have one coming in that red lens. That is the best time to be calling.. lol

Seriously though I know Moon Phase plays a very big part in animal movement, but also notice the barometric pressure. When it starts dropping you will typically see more critter movement. Generally there will be a front coming that causes the pressure to lower, but it does play a part in my opinion. A good idea is to watch for other critters like bgtme said about the cats in the ditches. Pay attention to your own dog at the house also. When it's hot and he is laying up and won't come out of the shade you can bet the coyotes are doing that same thing also.

I personally like to start calling about 30 minutes after dark or what I call Dark 30. You can sit there and by this time the coyotes around the countryside have fired up and started their serenade. In my opinion when they start doing that right after dark it means it is time to go hunting for the night and we are letting all you other coyotes we are getting ready, so if you are in our territory leave or we will kick your butt. Kind of a courtesy call to others and a alarm clock to me that it's time to get ready to call.

You have to figure the coyotes have been laying up all day for the most part and under the night darkness their stomachs dictate it's time to go eat. I usually have good success from Dark 30 until about 1 to 2am, then it dies. No clue why it happens this way, but more times than not it does. Around 5am it tends to start up again and be productive until 10am. Grant it depends on geographical location, temperature, moon phase and all climatic situations also. Colder temps cause the coyote to need to eat more due to their metabolism rate being higher during cold weather, so use that to your advantage also. A coyote has to eat approximately 2 pounds of food per day during cold weather to survive comfortably. So the colder it is the hungrier they are going to be.

These are just some of my opinions. Good luck and remember... If you're not out there trying you won't get anything no matter what time it is of night~!

I wonder if this lul around 1-2 am happens because they have been hunting for a few hours and at this point probably have something in there stomach by now . they get hungry again in 3-4 hrs which makes it 5 am and there out looking for more food to last them till dark 30

No clue, but it could be. Sounds as good as any other reason I've heard in the past. There have been a few occasions that 1am to 5am were fast and furious, but those are very rare for me around these parts. Those are the times I go strictly coyote vocalizations, because even when they are full they are still very territorial and it seems to work alot better during those hours than distress sounds. Again that is just my experience from my area, but should work the same anywhere~!
