Once bucky balls and nanotechnology was discovered, much progress. Thin film stuff has been around for a long time but getting 'viewable' film requires the nano-tech. Expect 5 yr for commercial short wave and another 5 for long wave. Consider OLEDs, invented IIRC in the late 70s(brit that couldn't get anyone interested) but unused until the late 90s. Or amorphous silicon, Mr Sony bought patent as no other interest.
