Anyone every use one of these? I think the compact version might come in handy while out coon huntin by myself. looks like it would be better than tryin to hold the light in one hand and the .22 in the other haha. Any pros and cons would be appreciated. Thanks fellas.

I have not used a light to hunt with before. I'm just wondering how some of you guys can use a hand held light? I am looking for a quality light with a red filter to mount on my scope. I have not even considered a hand held... How do you guys do it?

I think "they" do it by going in two's and one guy is the light guy.

I have just been out on my first night hunt with the Lightforce 200K light, really good for up to 75 yards, but I abandoned mounting it on the scope. I've found it far more effective and easy to wrap some camo tape around the barrel and mount it BELOW the gun. Once you try it you'll never go back to the scope mount position.

Burnham Bros. makes a light that is perfect for coon hunting and short range night shooting. It comes with a filter(red or amber )runs off of 2 9 volt batteries, has a silent switch and the whole unit weighs less than a pound and mounts to your rifle, no extra battery to carry. They claim 20,000 cp with the halogen bulb. $35.00

I've seen a couple of pics in the forums of rifles w/ a maglite taped under the barrel. Improvise folks. Lack of cash is the mother of cheap alternative inventions.

FUD, call Burnham Bros. 1(915) 396-4572
Tell them you want a SL-18 shooting light,$34.95 last I checked. Oh get the halogen bulb for $3.95 worth it.

Coyote Control is right. Lightforce is truly the best of the best. Mount the spotlight (100,000 cp) on the barrel, not on the scope as they would have you do. It sits tighter and carries better.

Cowherder I like your idea. One Ive thought about but havent thought of taping it to my barrel. Sounds like it would illiminate the blinding reflection that enters the scope. Im assumming that you run two spotlights though right? Seems like it would get awful heavy and cumbersome trying to swing a rifle around. I often hunt solo so tell me your setup.

I didn't like the idea of anything hanging from my barrel. I made a bracket and came off the front of my Harris bipod. I used a Weaver ring and base mount between the bracket and light for quick removal.

SP-10, I have to slightly wonder if you ever tried hanging that "scope light" from the barrel, because once you do, you won't go back.

Tommy: I go solo almost always because no one will go miles back into 20-degree weather on foot. I carry my own 17-lb battery, the Nightforce (Lightforce) light. Many times I had it mounted to the scope and it was more cumbersome and harder to mount, etc. A barrel can simply take more pressure and abuse and not be hurt than a scope. As far as the "barrel getting awfully heavy," SP, well, it doesn't. I'm used to bull barrels so a tapered barrel with a relatively light light is nothing. It acdtually holds you more steady on aiming, just like a bull barrel.

Remember, with a Lightforce, it's just the light, not the battery, that is attached to the gun. It's just so much more rugged to mount the light below the barrel than on the scope.

I use a rechargeable style headlamp. It did not have a red lense so I went to the auto parts store and put some red lense repair tape over it. It keeps your hands free and all you have to move is your head as you do your sweeps. When you go to shoot the light will be pointed right at the critter. This has worked very well for me.

Remember guys, no matter what you use , you'll need a red filter to be affective at night. I've used both and with a red filter the yotes will walk right in without being spooked.

I use both the hand held and the scope mounted light that you described above. I use the large spotlight(w/red filter) to spot long idstance and then switch to the scope mount to take the shot.

That's what we do here in southern Cali anyway. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hope this helps.

Coyote control which battery do you use - I know 12v 12amp hour, but which one under all there pull down menu's at the battery website. TIA.

Ok, from the menu click on Sealed Lead Acid, then 12 volt. You will need SLA 1212 (12volt-12amp). Now you will have to e-mail the company and ask them which one comes with the "spade" type terminals, if thats what you want.As you go to the higher amp batterys then the terminals are different.

My battery is spade terminals, I orginally bought it from wwwaccessbattery.com, but they are more expensive from them.

Hutt,
I mount my light on under side of the barrel of my shotgun, I have not used it on the rifle yet, but if cowherder uses it on the barrel then it must work ok.

Where abouts are you in Washington? Iam around the MT. Vernon area.

Before I had gotten my red lense for the light I just took a red marking pen and colored the lens with a couple coats and that worked ok for awhile.

A few years ago, my brother let me borrow a little fashlight made by SureFire. They are the industry standard for military and law enforcement. They work great for hunting yotes at night. They sell mounts for pistols, shotguns and rifles also filtered lens. They great for those hunters worried about weight and size. Check'em out at www.surefire.com
