Which do you prefer, the Nikon Coyote or one of the Nikon 223 scopes. They have the less expensive P-223 or one of the M-223 models. They have the 3x9 side focus and the 4X12 BDC scopes on sale at Midway USA. Thanks.

Depends on the application.. If you are looking for a scope primarily for hunting I would chose the coyote special... IMHO it's one of the best optics/reticles for shooting coyotes (predators-varmints).

If you will be punching paper I would go with the Nikon 223 optics.. The reticle on the coyote special is to hunt with not punch paper.. You will not achieve the results with the coyote reticle that you are accustomed to in regards to a regular duplex or crosshair..

I believe the explanation provided led to quite a few individuals having a bad experience with the coyote special when it first hit the shelves... Nikon has some fine offerings for the price point and they have the R&D that provides the spot on technology...

I will be looking to hunt coyotes with it mainly. Have three other rifles with standard duplexes so unexperienced with either of these.

I think you will be pleased with the coyote special for hunting applications... Do a search on them here on PM... But take in consideration my initial post on those that had issues with the reticle regarding target shooting or punching paper.. You just can't get the tight groups with that coyote reticle compared to the standard duplex... But for punching fur and FOV getting on target with the 4 legged species, IMHO Nikon has one of the best reticles going with the coyote special!!!!

First, I assume you are shooting an AR since you are looking at the 223 series of scopes. Whichever one you get, be sure to use the free Nikon Spot On software with it. It will match any load you shoot at any power and give you range cards you can print out. There is also a Spot On app.

The P-223 series is the best bang for the buck. The new PROSTAFF 5 series is a major upgrade in quality. The M-223 is MONARCH glass and coatings=excellent. I have shot both the P-223 and M-223 out 500 yards with the Spot On data.

I personally would go with the regular BDC reticles. Nikon has 11 of them for different purposes.

If you want an AR scope look at the SWFA deal on the P-223 4-12x40 with the SWFA one piece mount for $270.

The M-233 3-12x42 with the same mount runs $480.

I agree with Calypso regarding the quality of the P 223 and M 223 offerings from Nikon. You add the Spot On Technology and you can justify why one would chose a Nikon Optic... Now it comes down to the reticle... The various reticle offerings under the P 223 and M 223 line VS the Coyote Special reticle. As explained previous and privy your prior information regarding the theater being "hunting scenarios" (coyotes) The reticle on the Coyote Special IMHO is superior to the reticle offerings in the P 223 - M 223 line, when it comes to shooting coyotes "predators-varmints" etc. the Coyote Special offers a reticle that performs better in hunting situations. That being said if you want a more versatile platform and want an AR that will function equally between the two "theaters" or scenarios then I would chose the P223 or M 223. It comes down to you and ultimately the application. If the application is a designated coyote gun then "coyote special" is the obvious choice. If you want to perform on paper then the P 223 or M 223.

Lets consider glass: The Coyote Special has glass comparable to the Prostaff line of scopes Nikon offers.... As Calypso described the M 223 has glass compared to the Monarch line . So if glass clarity and light gathering is something important to you then some weight slides to the M 223 series..

I own a Coyote Special on my "hunting rig" and absolutely love it!! But when I go to the range with my other AR I take a Monarch mounted AR. So there we are!!!

I hope this helps with your ultimate decision... Please advise on your choice and most importantly your results .

Field and Cal., I agree completely with your replies. I have been using this scope since it first arrived on the market. It is now my go to coyote rig. I love the BDC and how Spot On really increases my accuracy by taking into account my cal., scope and ammo. The rest is up to me. Some range time and I was good to go. So far I am shooting 100% with this rig. Anyone who has shot with me know's that the rig gets most of the credit when it comes to my shooting abilities.
If you have any question's or issues, drop me a note. I love it when everything works the way it should!

This is my go to

Here's another option that I know Cal. has put rounds under.
