Hey y'all!

Me and my friend are building custom .308 "sniper" rifles. I'm looking to work off a savage action and he already got his 700 action. There going to be tatical rifles for long range steel out to 800 or so yards. May also do some deer mangement on my buddys farm out to about 600yards.

How would the Nikon Monarch perform on a .308 rifle out to 800 yards? It's the 4-16x42 mill dot

Thanks

~Bryan

it will do fine.

in order to make hits at 800 yards and beyond, you don't need magnification as much as you need tracking ability and resolution.

How much elevation adjustment does it have?

And you def need something that has excellent turrets for dailing back and forth for different ranges.

for a tactical application i would also suggest looking at the Millet TRS-1 and LRS-1 on your .308. very good price, look for reviews online. i plan to top a .308 with one.

You need to be looking at a scope with a minimum of 70 moa of internal adjustment and better yet 100 moa or more. True tactical scopes like Nightforce and the Leupold Mark 4 scopes have that kind of internal adjutement and the Sightron SIII has a good amount of internal adjustment also. Other than that the Super Sniper 10x HD would be a good choice if you can live wiht a fixed 10x.

If add a 20 moa base to your set up, you'll have internal adjustment. Also, if you map your load and go to Nikons web page and click onto the Spot On icon, enter your info, you can print off a range card. I did it with my AR .223 and the Coyote Special. I was able to reach out to 635 very consistantly and accurately. I'm also thinking of topping off my Dtech .243 wssm with the scope your looking at. Good luck and let us know what you come up with.

Wow! This is real funny. Me and my buddy are doing the exact same thing with .308.

Like Urimaginaryfrnd is saying, what we came up with is that internal adjustment is a problem.

I am spending a bit of cabbage on my rig, and will use a NF 5.5-22x56 atop a custom AR-10. My buddy on the other hand is trying to keep it on the cheap. I think all the scopes he recommends are good choices, but another to consider may be the 6.5-20x44mm Vortex Viper. It has 68 MOA and goes for $399. It is not a true "tactical" scope, but for $699 you can get the VV PST 4-16x50mm that is.

So, his setup is going to be as follows:
Rem 700 SPS Tactical .308 $550
VV 6.5-20x44mm $399
EGW 1 piece picatinny rail with 20 MOA cant $32
Burris 30mm low rings $50

We have yet to start reloading for these, but PLEASE share any loads, equipment, or stories on how you two are going about it.
