Nikon Prostaff 4-12x40 vs Redfield Revolution 4-12x40

I am about to purchase a new scope for my .204 and have narrowed it down to one of these two. I have a Prostaff on my .223 and really like it but I have also handled one of the redfields at the gun shop and I was impressed with how clear the glass was. I can get either one for about $180 new so price isnt a factor between the two. I just want some opinions on which one I should get and why. Thanks in advance, Josh

That's a tough decision. You maybe better off flipping a coin.

I like the hunter knobs of the ProStaff better. The redfield warranty is a bit easier to deal with. The fit and finish is a bit more refined on the Nikon, but the redfield maybe a bit more rugged.

I don't think I was any help, sorry, but for me, it's ProStaff.

Can't speak to the Redfield, but I do like the prostaffs for an inexpensive scope. I just put a new prostaff in 4-14x40 on my 243. I've had the thing in the rack on my 4-wheeler, bouncing all around it hasn't shifted one bit in terms of zero. I wouldn't hesitate one bit in buying another.

I have 2 Redfields and just purchased a Prostaff this weekend and have mounted it, but haven't shot it yet. The reason I tried the Prostaff this time around is because of the adjustment knobs. Both of my Redfields have "clicks" that aren't always noticeable. In other words, if I decide to go up 4 clicks there are many times when I have to wonder if I got my 4 clicks in. Not a huge deal as once it's sighted in I don't mess with them, but when the scopes are so evenly matched in price you have to find something to set them apart. The Nikon makes a nice audible click. I applaud Redfield for forcing Nikon to redesign the Prostaff. Nikon did their homework and I like the result. Before the redesign I would and did pick the Redfield.

And Nikon even includes a set of scope covers although they are the economical kind. Still, just little touches that add up.

Has Nikon changed their prostaff lineup since last year? I think I have had my prostaff for two years this winter and im happy with it. If they have upgraded since then, that will probabaly be the way I go.

If I was on the fence, I'd always buy the American made product.

That being said, I have a 4-12 Redfield, and it is way clearer than my 4-12 Mark AR Leupold. Why, I don't know, except maybe the AO on the more expensive Leupold clouds it up a little.

American made, better warrantee if something goes wrong, great glass for the money. Yeah, the clicks are mushy to say the least, but you can't get everything for that price.

I have never had to use either companies warranty service but they both offer a full lifetime warranty so i dont see why one would be better than the other except for maybe customer service being slower. I have shot several rifles with leupolds and I honestly cant tell a difference in glass clarity between them and my Prostaff. I looked up the new Prostaffs and it looks like they changed the click adjustment, added a fast focus eye piece, and are now sun-shade acceptable. [beeep] I dont know what way im going to go wit but I will probably end up with another Prostaff. Can get it brand new shipped to my door for $169. Or I may just not worry about a new scope and pick up another rifle. Havent quite made up my mind yet. Still got awhile until I need it so who knows what will happen.

I may have to try a Redfield but I am presently very loyal to Nikon because of the way they handled a warranty issue I had. I bought a used Nikon Buckmaster on Ebay and it would not hold zero and the clicks were not crisp or very audiable. I sent the Buckmaster in (even being the second owner is was still under warranty) I waited about a week and got it back I was unhappy with it because they told me they were going to change the coin style turets cause the previous owner had chewed them all up trying to adjust it. When I got it back they had not been replaced, but the clicks were much more positve and audiable. I called and talked to their rep and told him what I had been promised and how unhappy I was. He told me to send it back and He would make sure they were changed. Deer season was less then a week away and I told him I would have to live with it till season was over. THe next day after work a BRAND NEW Buckmaster was sitting on my door step (the new style with resetable finger turets) There were instructions in the box and shipping label to send mine back in. I was over joyed to say the least! I boxed up my old one put their prepaid shipping label on it and sent it back to them expecting that they where basically tradeing me... about three weeks later I got the old scope back again in the mail completely refurbished with and appology letter. NOW THATS QUALITY CUSTOMER SERVICE! They have pretty much made me a life long customer as far as hunting scopes go..

That is very impressive, I can't blame you for sticking with them. Companies that treat you well deserve to keep your business.

I just wish they weren't made overseas. We need to get business back in this country.

Never used a REDFIELD or looked through one so I can’t comment on them, but I do own several Prostaff and Monarch models (scopes and rangefinder). However, when comparing the Monarch and Prostaff, I was hard pressed to tell the difference in glass (day/night), but (for me) the edge went to Monarch for tracking and repeatability. I haven’t tried the new Prostaff so I can’t comment on it.

Nikon has always taken care of any issues or questions that I have had and for the record, the issues were caused by me and not the product so for me, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy anything Nikon.

Don't get too caught up in American Made. I own Ford and Chevy vehicles all my life and they are not 100% American made.

I drive them because they are good vehicles, fit me well and I like’em and carrying an American name is a plus.

Anyway, I recommend that you look/compare them yourself, if possible and base your decision on what fits you best and reflect back to warranty, product reviews (others firsthand experience, not hearsay or such and such said), cost, etc.

It’s funny how a lot of people say “ You get what you pay for” which is not always true, sometimes you overpay for what you get, get more than you paid for, or even buy something you don’t need (guilty of this myself) because it’s cool/new which you will never really get full use of.

I meant for this to be a short post, but because of bashing, unnecessary comments, past experience, other threads, etc.... I got carried away

Good Luck on whatever you decide.

looked through the redfields and they seem like a good scope i did have a prostaff and for the money it was decnt glass. i think its a toss up between the two. but personaly i would go for the redfield just to try something different.

The new Nikons are pretty stylish IMO. Seem to be a step up from the previous ones. I just bought one last night and havent used it but the "feel" is good so far. The Redfields looked good too but the finish wasnt as nice as the Prostaff IMO. I too think Nikon's customer service is great. I bought a display model rangefinder scope(cant remember model name) and it didnt have the mounts. I called Nikon expecting to buy new ones and they justed asked for my addy and sent me new ones in a couple days free.

I own 8 nikon scopes (prostaff, monarch and buckmaster). Just recently a friend of mine asked me to purchase a redfield and install it for him. When the scope arrived I was VERY impressed with the quality and craftsmanship. The optics are crystal clear and the adjustments are solid and true. I definitely suggest the redfield over the nikon.

I will add this, sitting next to a buddy of mine while coyote hunting late one evening, about to wrap up the calling session I look over at my buddies new Redfield scope and ask if I could look through it. Well needless to say his $150 scope was not only brighter but clearer than my $300 Nikon! And that was during low light conditions when scopes should be judged. My vote goes to Redfield.
