Nikon Prostaff vs. Leupold Rifleman

Ok guys I need your help. I just purchased my new coyote rifle in .223 and am looking to top it with either a Nikon Prostaff 4-12-40 or Leupold Rifleman 4-12-40 I have never owned either brand of scope, but have read alot about them on here and elsewhere. From what I gather the Leupold has better eye relief, weighs less, and is almost 2 inches shorter than the Nikon. The Prostaff has a better fov at 100 yards and is considerably cheaper. I am just wondering what you guys thoughts are on the two and which one you would choose. Also does Nikon carry a lifetime guarantee like Leupold does? Im looking to purchase in the next couple of weeks so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Josh

if you are going to put out the cash through in a couple more bucks and go for the nikon buckmasters, I have one prostaff, one rifleman and three buckmasters. You can find a buckmasters at a prostaff price at natchez.com they are refurbished and cant be beat

Josh I have had both and to me it seemed like the Nikon had more eye relief...I dont mean to change things up on you but I would take a hard look at those Vortex scopes...They have unconditional guarantee!!! From what I understand thats the best in the buisness! I bought a 3.5x10x50 Diamondback last week and WOW, it is bright and clear and from what I understand their customer service is wonderfull also....If I remember correctly the Leupold rifleman I had, had 2moa adjustment on the turrents and I didnt like that...If I was choosing between the 3 I would buy another Vortex but if I was choosing between the 2 I would get the Nikon...Good Luck with whichever you choose...

If you intend on buying a lesser grade of name brand scope check out the new Redfield's. They cost less then either one of your stated choices and are a fantastic scope for the money.
If you wanted to step up a notch then take a hard look at the Leupold VXII and VXII series. In my opinion they are top quality and they are great scopes, period.

I have (2) 2-7 prostaffs on guns .22lr and a 12ga Ultra Slugger and none have any problems with holding zeros. I believe they're one of the best bang for the buck. They gf used the ultra slugger last year to harvest a big 18.5", 9pt buck.

i was at one time trying to decide on the nikon buckmaster or the rifleman. i went with the nikon it was super clear. i just felt you got more for your money.

If those are my only two choices the the Leupold wins hands down. Absolutely the best warranty on the market. And you are buying a lower end scope so you may need the warranty in 5 or 10 or 15 years. Leupold will be there. And if you decide to upgrade your scope in a few years you will get most of your money back from the Leupold, not the Nikon.

As far as real world performance is concerned. Not a nickles worth of difference. But the warranty and resale value alone makes the Leupold worth twice as much. Heck they are probably made at the same place?? Philippines?? China?? Who knows?? Whoever has the cheapest bid. And that is why the warranty is so important!! Tom.

I have a 3X9 Rifleman and like it alot, I have it on a rimfire and it has never let me down. I dont have any experience with the Prostaff but I do have a couple Buckmasters and they are great scopes for the money. There are usually some pretty good deals on used scopes in the various classifieds on the net some in like new condition.

I feel the Rifleman and the VX-1 are overpriced for their quality. The friction turrets on the Rifleman are lousy. Optically the ProStaff is equivalent or better and the turrets are easily repeatable. They click!

Better glass is out there but for this price point, The ProStaff is hard to beat.

I would recommend the next step up in optics but a budget conscious buyer can do a lot worse then a ProStaff. The Nikon warranty is the same as the Leupy.

YMMV

Check out SWFA's Sample List is you're willing to get a refurbished product.
