Hey guys,
I live in Mich. and just got into to coyote calling with a e-caller.
we have a great population of coyotes, but the rabbits have disapeared over the years, i'm guessing because of all the coyotes.

Should i not be using the rabbit distress call then, and go to a destress call to the the animals we do have, like a turkey distess call? which we have plenty of.
Or would these coyotes still come to a rabbit call ?

Really appreciate your input, thx!

You could switch to something native to the area, but maybe try a higher pitch rabbit call too. I've had coyotes hang up at two hundred yards staring at the decoy and listening to a rabbit distress only to have them come racing in when I switch to a Prarie dog distress.
I believe that if you are calling in an area that hasn't seen many hunters coyotes will come in to almost anything. They are very curious and not all that smart, despite making me look stupid at times.

Try the rabbit destress. I've called a lot of coyotes with sounds that either weren't native or weren't in season.

Hello gunner, They love the rabbit.
You can get cottontail. jackrabbit, snowshoe rabbit, course rabbit calls. hand calls. Try them all, in different hunts. they like other calls too. but like they said above rabbit calling is a universal thing for them. All the other pro's i know say the same.

you have no snowshoe rabbits in Michigan, thats hard to believe.

With all the snow you get in Northern Michigan, the snowshoe rabbits are probaly eating the tops of the brush. buds, bark. the higher the snow the higher the snowshoe rabbit is eating the bark off of the brush, and the evergreen trees too.

does the pup distress work even this time of year when there are no pups, or do you have to use it when there are coyote pups in the woods...?

i live in southern Mich. and we have cottontails. used to have tons of them, but there are very few in this area now.

Are they coming to help the distressed pup, or do they eat there own ?

Ask around to see what the locals are calling them with. If it's rabbit, use anything else and they likely come in. They get used to a call and won't come because they know that someone shot at them with that sound. Use a bird distress, pig distress, or magpies....anything but rabbit should work good. I've used locator howls to start off with as the season gets to an end. They don't always answer but often come in.

I hunt almost exclusively at night, and go at least once a week. In the past two years, I've seen less than 10 rabbits total, yet most of the yotes I've called have been with some form of cottontail in distress.
