No wad in Remington #4 Buckshot?

I bought a box yesterday for $5 and noticed that three of the five shells weren't crimped completely closed and I could see the exposed pellets. From what it looks like there is no wad In the shell. One looks like Remington must have put some clear glue over the crimping to keep it shut. If there is no wadding I would assume this stuff is not going to hold a pattern. I've used federals tripple wad #4 buck with great results but dont know if I dare shoot this stuff through my shotgun if it doesn't have a wad to protect
My barrel and choke.

I've googled it enough and there is no plastic wad. Its just loose pellets surrounded by buffering shot. The pellets sit on a fiber type wad that separates it from the smokeless black powder. I would assume these rounds are made for older barrels that don't have screw in chokes.

I have no clue why you would assume that...

The lack of a shot cup in no way makes these shells unsafe to shoot in a shotgun with choketubes...

Plastic is going to protect steel from lead? How does all of that work?

Shoot them...they're fine. If they pattern in your set up, then go kill with them. If not, then move along.

Lead shot is much softer than the steel barrels and steel screw in chokes, so the soft lead pellets won't damage the much harder steel.

Shotgun shells with lead shot in them were used for about 100 years before plastic wads came along.

I believe lead damaging barrel/choke has been covered so no need to go there (topic of muzzleloaders, etc) .

How about some homework on brinell hardness! Let me get you started, Pure lead has a BHN of 5

Lots of folks use gas seals with and without buffer. Some even removed the petals on WAA12 wads.

Both of my 12 gauges pattern buckshot best without a cup and a tighter choke.

Pattern testing with different chokes is the only way to know what works best in your gun.

You can shoot them, they are just like the Winchester 12 gauge military green hull 00 buck.
Short range shell, they will deform pellets and scatter right out of the barrel, for self defense they are fine, for long range hunting, well lets just say try a pattern test at 40yds and see for your self.

All shotgun shells have a "wad". It is what separates the shot from the powder. I think what you are referring to, is that fact that the wads in the shells you have.....have no petals or "shot cup". They are perfectly fine. However.....i don't think the yotes will like them much. Lol
