Ive read books, watched video and killed 2 in 5 years. Any other PA hunters out there? I feel like ive learned alot of "Dont Do's" please share your experience.

Managed to kill two by calling in the last eight years. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Killed a few in front of hounds though.

I think its the hunter density in PA that affects the coyotes shyness. We here in PA have ALOT of hunters every year. I dont think its our lack of yotes, I think we have plenty, I think they have plenty of food and lots of reasons not to come to calls.

Not too many hound hunters in my neck of the woods (Northeast PA) however everyone spends ALOT of time in the woods scoutin, small game hunting, or i know of a few folks whose idea of a good time is terrorizin local game populations on there quads /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif Some even drive deer with quads

. So our dogs see alot of humans making them pretty street smart and know the 2 legged animals are bad news

I posted this in another thread. Seemed fitting here.

Ive learned that the yotes in my area's like the bigger stands of hemlock durring cold weather and snow and rain. They seem to move from woods to woods every night, and the only realistic way of finding them is hearing them howl and going night hunting, or finding there tracks in fresh snow. Me and my hunting buddy recently entered the distric 9 trappers assoc. coyote hunt and found some yote tracks leading into a woods where a den was, so we set up as quietly as we coulkd and called 2 dogs into about 4o yards, just outside of where we could see, and they continuosly circled us for about 30 mins or so and darkness came and we felt it best to leave so we did a howl and heard them run, so we got out of there.

I'm new at this, but been hunting many years. I think they are tough. When the real pains of hunger hits with all the snow cover they will be looking for any hand-out, even frozen deer. And a nice .25-06 for dessert. All hungry coyotes, welcome to justshoot cafe.

Haha, justshoot do you use bait often? I wonder about using bait, I like calling though. About 6-7 years ago when we didnt have yotes here I did alot of fox hunting and just as you say, when we got a good 6 inches for a week or so the foxes would come in hot and heavy, but the winters have been mild recently and I've had no such luck.

The idea of bait is intruiging, especially for greenhorn in the sport such as myself. I have however had no luck in locating anything to use. I have used trapping scents but i am convinced that all i accomplished was an extra load of wash using that smelly stuff.

I used to use Skunk Scent, but now I use scent lok and no cover scents. To me baiting is seems time consuming and what if they drag it off like happens so many times?

Yes it would definately be time consuming and i think it would soak a little bit of fun out of the hunt but if it turned out effective i'd definately give it a shot. Thats why ive been watching Just Shoot's threads so closely.

You mentioned the recent Dist.9 Trapper's Hunt, there were 718 hunters officially registered (I'm sure alot more were out however). 21 coyote were brought in with more than half of those killed in front of hounds. Gives you some idea of calling success overall here in PA. Heaviest weighed in was 43.85lbs
Yotehunter74 you have the best numbers I've heard here out of the callers I know. Guys I know that run hounds do fairly well. I grew up running fox/coyote with hounds but now strictly run beagles on cottontail/hare.

it has been my hunting obsession to kill PA yote but no luck yet came close many times. My buddy says it s like hunting big foot, but i refuse to give up good luck
