I don't know about Eastern OR but here in EasternWA they're all down now. I think that a week of upper 90 degrees will send them underground. Maybe a few will come up if the weather cools but for the most part they are all down by the end of July
Sometimes I wonder if ground tempurature has anything to do with the hibernation.
Where is a good place to go varmint hunting here in Wa and Ore ?
I just bought my first AR 15 a Stag Model this Jan. I recently just upgraded to a 22" Shilen Upper. I was wondering is there anywhere close by to SW Wa that I could go varmint hunting, rock chucklers, ground hogs, coyotes, etc....
The key to finding chucklers and sage rats is to locate their favorite food (agriculture) and habitat.
The volcanic rock found in Central Oregon is removed from the fields near Madras where hay and alfalfa are grown. Sage rats are probably there and chucklers definitely inhabit those rock piles.
Even a small pile or length can be home to chucks- I was amazed at easy they are to locate. You gotta snoop around locating rock piles then knock on doors.
Good to see another air rifle person here. How much heat ya' packing in your hottest air rifle?
I am strictly air rifle at the moment (.25 and .45). I am looking for fellow hunters (particularly magnum air rifle people but not to picky) to assist me in scouting an area I have received a hot tip on for feral hogs. It's a real long shot but I am going to try to be the first airgun hunter (or amongst the first anyway) documented taking a feral hog in Oregon. I am hoping to do this in time to send an article in for publication in the next issue of "The Airgun Hunting Quarterly" which will be focused on BigGame hunting with BigBores. See my post "Assistance Scouting Oregon Hogs".
There were few rats to be seen while driving through Christmas Valley but there were some. The Dinsdale folks, major land holders there, were super friendly and provided a map showing the locations of their numerous fields.
I was stopped on a road near some newly cut fields but unsure about whether I would be trespassing to shoot the three rats 25 yards from my car. A trucker came by and pointed me to a small p-town up the road and allowed me to park my truck, Super Wife and two dogs in the shade of the alfalfa bales!!! That's hospitality.
I don't have time to explore a hog hunt this Summer or Fall because of massive painting projects, maybe a new roof install, and Fall Chinook are coming up soon.
