Not taking a shot

I pass on a lot of shots on coyotes if I feel I cant cleanly kill them. Nothing worse than a wounded animal that will suffer greatly because of my negligence. I own it to the predators I hunt to take them humanly. We varmint hunters are under a microscope even by big game hunters that dont hunt predators. I receive a lot of criticism from them. “ I don't shoot anything I don't eat.” “ They were there first”. I spend a lot of time working up very accurate loads because of this.

I don't pass on too many if I can help it. That's why I test different bullets so I know what kills fast at different angles and things like that.

Which I think is a good idea with any bullet you hunt with. I don't want anything to suffer if it doesn't have to. But I know not every shot opportunity will be picture perfect either.

As for what big game hunters think, I don't care. How many of those guys are more about what is on a deer or elks head than how good the meat is? How many of those guys put that rifle they're using up after having it bounce around in their front seat for a few months, only to take it out big game huntin the following year without putting it on paper first? All because it was sighted in last year and they killed a deer with it the opening day of deer season. How many of those guys have made a bad shot with a bow and never found that animal to get its meat but they sure got out there to find its head to keep?

People spend too much time worrying about what others are doing instead of focusing on being better themselves. It's hard enough keeping track of me without worrying what someone else thinks about me. I think if we all had that attitude, we'd all be better off. We can all be just a little better and we should strive to be.

I agree with parts of what both yinz said.
I only take shots I feel I can kill with.
Most BG hunters are not meat hunter else our PA deer herd would be more in check because more doe would be killed for the venison.
And ABSOLUTELY don't concern yourself with others unless they are affecting you or yours.
TREAT OTHERS AS-----

Practice makes perfect. I like to make ethical kills. Not fun to have to “put one down”. Most of the time it’s DRT.

It depends on why I'm calling.
Receration, I'm kind of picky, but for predater control, if I see one, I'm going to try IF it's under 400 yards. I don't like to edgicate them, but if I don't shoo,t there is NO chance of taking it out. Like killing them from your living room couch.

Im not as noble as others when it comes to coyotes. Ill take any shot I can. They are varmints not big game.

Do as you please... but I don't wish an agonizing death on any animal. Kill em all I say... but by damn kill em. Maybe I'm just getting old.

I have never taken a shot over 250 and probably never will. If I don't feel I can get a clean kill I let it pass for next time. It helps that I long range shoot close to every other weekend so get real comfortable with the guns. I screw up once in a while but also find fawns and other animals they massacre so don't feel to bad about it. The divide in this country can never meet in the middle so I could care less what the nut jobs think.

Your absolute right. The guys that try and criticize me rarely shoot their rifles and yes they get them out and ho hunting assuming there still on. I shoot Marmonts with my 6 CM just so im dead on when im deer hunting. The other guys no way
