Obtaining Proof of a Coyote or Coydog...

Just wondering if it is possible to obtain the information needed to tell if a "coyote" is a coyote or a coydog from a skull and pictures? I'm guessing no, but I'm curious as to if my black one from awhile back was a real coyote. Thanks.

I.S.U. Ames, Iowa. Has a large Veterinarian School & lab. Perhaps you could contact them & ask.

No doubt in my mind, that they exist. As well as, some other unknown coyote cross breeds. Rare...but there.

The one thing I have always heard about the coydog is the curve in the tail like a dog. Coyote tail always hangs straight.

And melanistic phases of all creatures do exist, we just don't always see them or perhaps they dont survive because of the diferences. Jimmie

Jimmie,

I don't buy into the curved tail aspect on "coydogs". The wild canines I've seen. Most looked like they had different sires[different in body shape, size & color]. Didn't see a curved tail on any of them.

The smallest canine, looked to be pushing 55-60lbs.

The more I read from different posts, the more I think it was a real coyote. It had the amber eyes, the straight bushy tail, the white star on his cheest, and he was roughly around 45 lbs.

the only hybrid I have ever seen until recently was produced in captivity!about a month ,ago One of my land owners shot a Hybrid I had been after for months! DNA testing can be done to prove what the parents where, but it is expensive! I would love to have it done on this guy! he was always with normal coyotes looked like females,he was about 4 years old and weighed 38 pounds.about average for an adult male in our area.
there are at least 3 more unusaul colored coyotes or hybrids in the same area! I've seen 2 of them land owner saw the other.
what is strange to me is that 20+ years ago about 3/4 of a mile down the creek there was a black coyote female with 3 black pups and 1 normal pup, they however looked pure, this one does not!

Grunt,

I agree with you. I believe you have a full coyote in the melanistic phase. When I read your post and you mentioned a black coyote. The first two things that came to my mind were:

A) I bet he's from the South.
B) I bet it has a white patch on it's chest.

When people post pictures of melanistic coyotes, the majority of the time A and B are correct.

I'm hoping to tag a coydog this year. I hunted 3 different ones for the past 2 years now. One looks like a coyote, but with a border collie white band on it and white feet. One is a canary yellow and white coyote, and huge in size. The third is mostly black. I haven't seen them this year, yet.

A calling buddy from work just secured land from a group of farmers that want the coydogs killed. They have a group of 5 or more. I'm hoping we can catch it on video.

Glenn,

Bad news on the landowner tagging that coydog. You were wired to kill him, back when I was down there in June. I was hoping you'd tag him before he did.

i've always heard that a true coyote was smaller, slimmer, and just kind of ugly looking (scraggly hair, thin legs, etc.) and that the bigger ones w/ heavier builds and longer german shepard like hair have some dog blood in them. i don't know if this is true, but it kind of makes some sense.

Tony,

You get over my way this snowfly. I'll take to where "Rusty" lurks [big ole boy, for sure]. We can rip away on some coyotes in the mean time /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif.

All this "coydog" talk, is gonna cause an uproar amongst the troops, eh /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My brother that lives in the Texas panhandle says an old timer out there told him to check the hackle hairs on the top of the shoulders. If my memory is correct, a hair with four rings of color on it indicates a coyote and one with only three indicates one with domestic blood. This however has never been verified by anyone else. Just food for thought. You might make a post on the board under Predator Biology and see what you come up with.

Ok, I think I've got it...I created a new web page that has pictures of both the large black coyote I shot and the smaller pup that my friend shot, both have melanistic characteristics, and I am curious to hear opinions on if it is probably a full coyote. All feedback is appreciated. The website is: Coyote Page-Big one and Pup

I'll try and insert the pictures...

Looks coyote to me. Too bad ya don't have some close up day time pics.

Some yrs back, maybe 15 or so. Their was a litter of Black German Shepherd & coyote pups raised, just East of me some 15 miles. The people who had them, turned them loose. They became feral. A couple of them became local problems [stock killers].

One was shot weighed 70lbs or so. My Dad seen it & told me the story. He said it looked like a wolf.

Originally coming from up in the northern part of New York, we used to see them quite often back when coyotes were unheard of, or unseen.
I'm sure if they were a cross breed, they'd have to have coyotes somewhere with which to breed them. They could've been more a feral dog, than anything, but although they appeared more dog, than coyote, they resembled them somewhat, and their actions, or traits gave them away.

Since I moved to the southwestern side of the state, I was able to identify, and shot one with a bow about 10yrs. ago or so. While up in my treestand bowhunting deer, I heard a domestic dog barking back in the tag alders about 300yds. off. I could tell that he was chasing deer, and although a Deputy Sheriff at the time, I could've killed the dog for doing such.
As he was still a distance off, I all of a sudden, heard the deer crashing towards me through the swamp grass. The deer ran directly under my stand and was heading for the next county as fast a possible.
The barking dog was still a ways off, when again I heard the crashing sound coming to me......what, another deer ?

Nope, a coydog, or feral, popped out of the brush running silent. It ran following the deer's scent, right up until it hit my scent trail coming in. It froze solid right on my trail, and then immediately cut around cross wind and turned back in to pick up the deer's trail.
Right then & there, based on it's actions, and appearance, I knew that it wasn't domestic. Although it had domestic colors, face & paws, if you were to bag those points, you'd say coyote....period. The tail was definitely coyote.
As the dog entered an opening around 22yds, I sent a broadhead through it's chest.

I took some ribbing from my hunting buddies when I called them over it, saying that I "killed some kids doggie", that was until I showed up at their location with it in my truck.
Yeah, jokingly, they came out with a bowl of dog food in their hand laughing all the way......until the tailgate dropped on my truck. Their mouths all dropped open and they said "what the hell is that ?"

I even went so far as having the dog examined by a wildlife biologist from our State Wildlife Agency (NYSDEC). His exact words were, "yep, it's more dog than coyote, but it's definitely a mix".

I got photo's of it, if I can dig them out, I'll post them here.....kind of reddish brown fur & a dark muzzle like a shepard.

Take care,
Bob

Handgunr,

Looking forward to your pic.

I tend to believe their mostly dog/coyote X's. As compared to wolf/dog cross. But who knows for sure. I've hunted canines [Red Fox & coyote], for 40 yrs. Only ran across a handfull [that I thought...What the heck is that!].

Circa mid 60's, my Dad & his two huntin Bud's. Went out to East central Nebraska, to hunt coyote with their sighthounds.

One day they were walking some grassy pasture land. Kicked up a pack of coyotes out in front a couple hundred yards or so.

He said there was, what appeared to be a German Shepherd coyoteX amongst the pack. It was quite abit larger than the coyotes & displayed their same response.

Well, I don't have the photo posted on a server anywhere and I guess you can't put them in your posts either.

I'll have to figure out how to post it somewhere where it can be viewed.
I've got several great dog pic's, as well as the coydog shot.

If you want to email them to me, I'll put them up on my website and you can reference them from there. Just shoot me a PM.
