Old El Paso K6 Weaver

Well, I picked up an old Mauser rifle Saturday and it has an old Weaver K6 on it. The scope is in really good condition for its age. Glass is nice and clear and the adjustment functions seem to be working just fine. The rifle has been re-barreled to 243 and sets in a really nice Fajen stock. Completely bedded from front to back. The scope just seems to "fit" the little rifle but is the older model with non zeroing cross-hairs. So when you look through the scope, the vertical cross-hair is a little off center. My question is, should I upgrade or leave it alone? I really like the looks of the old scope on the rifle but I know a better scope could improve performance.

That is a very old Weaver. If you are going to use the gun I'd upgrade a little to a gloss K-6 with perma-center cross hairs or go one better and find an early Leupold fixed 6 with perma-center crosshairs then if it does die you can get it fixed for free. Even a newr fixed gloss fixed 6 or 4 wouldn't look out of place.

Second option is to swap out the Weaver bases to redfield or Leupold that are windage adjustable on the rear ring to center the crosshairs.

Third option if you can find one a B&L Balvar 8(2-8 variable) with a B&L or Kurhausky(spelling?) it would be period correct and very nice scope windage and elevation are in the base.

The old Balvar scope are very nice but have no internal windage and elevation adjustments and need a base with them built in. I had one set up for the Egg Shoot this year in a jerry-rigged mount but broke the mount just before the shoot. I just re-did a rifle with a Leupold mount and use the rear base adjust ment for the windage and shim the rings for the elevation, it is a one load gun but fun to shoot/hunt with when somebody notices there are no adjustments on the scope, totally blows there minds.

Here it is set up in Weaver windage adjustable rings that broke. I have it in Leupold bases now and it is shooting great.

I call it the "Turret Twisters Nightmare"

Thanks AWS, I'll start looking. I replace the safety yesterday evening with a low profile type so it works good without hitting the scope. Doing a cold blue to revive the looks of the barrel and action and so far, its looking really nice although I know its probably temporary. The Fajen is really nice so I'm leaving it alone. If accuracy is good, I'll replace the trigger with a Timney. Thanks for your advice!!
