Old friend came home

Years ago, probably 5yrs, I had a mint Remington 700 Varmint Special in 222, with the nice walnut stocks. My gunsmith friend hounded me to death to buy it and I ended up selling it to him. Something that I have regretted for a long time. I was BS'ing with him this morning and he said he would sell it. Six months ago it was a no sale but I sold him my Sako in 222 and he said now he really didn't need two triple deuces. The old fart clipped me for $200 more than what I sold it to him for but I wasn't going to miss a chance to get it back. The good part is in the 5 years he has had it he only shot it one time and only 20 rounds. It looks as good today as it did back then. Happy Happy!!!!!

Sounds like you got a great friend back.. 222s are one of my favorites, not only great for varmints and targets, it is one of my go-to cartridges for called coyotes.

If you were my friend, I'd have sold it back to you for what I paid... that's what a "friend" does.

Glad you're happy though... I've acquired a couple that I let go and later wished I had not.

He's my friend but he doesn't do anything without a little profit. I'll get even down the road. And it was still cheaper than market value on the Varmint Specials. I'm OK with it. He has given me a lot of stuff for free through the years. Even a damn cat that I didn't need. But even the cat has been fun so all is good.

I suppose it does all even out... but a cat? Man he got you on that one lol.

Had a gun club meeting last night but went a little early to shoot the triple deuce. Took 20 rounds loaded with 4 different charges of 4198 and a 52 grain Berger. smallest group was a .460 largest was .684 @ 100yds. It was hard to keep the barrel from getting warm but now I have a base line to start with. Smallest group was with 19.5 grains which was top end book max but I got no pressure signs of any kind with nice round edges on my primers. I might start bumping the load a little and see if I can shrink the group a little more.

P.S. This is a bone stock untouched rifle. No bedding and I don't even think the barrel is free floated. Shooting groups like this I may leave it alone.

@William Suter
Bill blow a small fan across the barrel (even those cheap battery operated ones with a mister might work, although the non mister would probably be best).
worth a try I think. IDK if targeting the chamber leade area of the barrel would be best or not or if it would help /hurt with mirage in extended shooting. If it don't work well you could keep the shooter cooler in hot weather.

might be a futile attempt then again??????

I have in the past used a patch with a lubricant in the bore, then dry it with a patch pausing 30 seconds to 1 min to cool the bore a bit before dry patching (bolt open / removed while cooling, and would never shoot the bore "wet", focusing on a dry patch not a clean patch) .
It has worked better than one suspect, it is or can be a pain in the........ sometimes.
Just a thought YMMV
(my thoughts are that it keeps the bore in pretty much the same condition shot to shot, probably more so in carbon vs temp)

I have a barrel cooler and it kinda works. I was setting on a bench outside last night and had pretty much direct sun on my bench and rifle. We have a building I can shoot out of that has AC but I set up outside last night. Just lazy and didn't have a lot of time before our meeting. Our new building will spoil a guy. AC in the summer and heat in the winter. We can shoot 50 to 300yds from inside.

NICE !!!!
Usually I'm using the local Arkansas Game and Fish commission range for my shooting. While it is a nice range.... no A/C so the days we hit triple digits it's sweat / barrel mirage etc. time. To me it's worth it.
Side note is that because of "some people's children" some have attempted to shoot over the back stop in the past. Which the response was a remodel that prohibited the practice. The result increased the noise and muzzle "blast" at the shooter's bench. Not complaining just stating facts.
And pleased the results you are getting Bill I would be quite happy with your results.

Having this new building is very nice. You still have to deal with wind, just not inside the building. There are 9 windows and benches to shoot out of. We're a private club with 553 members and we have our fair share of "rule breakers". I was on a mower one day and had all the safety lights on and the horn was sounding. A guy drove down range and asked if it would bother me if he shot a few rounds. Really????

Bill, just in case your cat did not come w/directions:

HOW TO WASH A CAT
1. Thoroughly clean the toilet.
2. Add the required amount of shampoo to the toilet water, and have both lids lifted.
3. Obtain the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.
4. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids (you may need to stand on the lid so that he cannot escape). CAUTION: Do not get any part of your body too close to the edge, as his paws will be reaching out for any purchase he can find.
5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a "power wash and rinse" which I have found to be quite effective.
6. Have someone open the door to the outside and ensure that there are no people between the toilet and the outside door.
7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids.
8. The now-clean cat will rocket out of the toilet, and run outside where he will dry himself.
Sincerely,
The Dog
