I have an old military as-issued Mauser. It is marked "republica peruana" Fab. Nat. D'Armes De Guerre
Herstal Belgique Modelo 1935. It is also marked
.30 on the reciver, can I assume that it is a 30-06?
I sure would like to hear from someone who knows about
old Mausers, the rifle is in good condition and safe to fire,
I just want to be sure about the Cal.

Greybeard,

Personally I wouldn't assume that. Sounds like it might be an (Argentinian) or possibly (French) made rifle. I had a German 8mm Mauser many moons ago. If I recall correctly, caliber was stamped on the breach, close to the barrel. Get a magnifying glass & look very carefully for any other markings/stampings on the bolt/breach & barrel.

I think that would be a Peruvian Mauser "short rifle" made by FN under license by Herstal in Belgium, possibly sold to the Argentines or the Chileans.

I think there were a small number that were rebarreled in .30-06 but they were mostly 7.65 X 53mm (Argentina) or 7 X 57mm (Chile).

I would have a gunsmith check the chambering. Many Mausers have been rebarreled/rechambered and not marked very well showing the new caliber (I plead guilty).

It should be a good rifle and highly amenable to sporterizing/accurizing as the Belgians used high quality steel until about 1942 when the war caused supply problems.

Leon is right on about it being a Belgian-made Mauser for Peru.Would think it would be pretty rare, but don't assume anything about the caliber, there's just no telling on these old Mausers. have a gunsmith check it.

Would have to go to the back of the safe to find it. But I traded a fishing rod for a mauser that is actually a 308. Not marked as such, understand that these were actually worked over older versions and sent to Spain. So I would definatly not trust any markings.

I think you have a model 35 chillian or peruvian, I am pretty sure it was made by FN in belgium. BTW they are great actions and certainly worthy of making a custom rifle out of however depending on condition and if the #'s match it would prolly not be worth hacking up into anything it would be worth more together.
