? on Hunting Foxes

In the county I hunt deer in I can't hunt with a center-fire rifle, therefore I hunt with a shotgun shooting a slug, a .50 cal muzzleloader, or a bow. I would like to have a fox mounted and I'm sure the farmer whose land I hunt would like less foxes because of his chickens. Will a .22 cal hollow point stop a fox if I try to keep the shots under 50 yards? I figure to hit one with the shotgun or muzzleloader wouldn't leave much to mount.

.22 HP rimfire in the shoulders or straight down the Sternum.
BB shot from the shotgun[not to close mind you] /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've always been told to aim right between the eyes as he looks at you, but more than once I've had them get away and need to be shot again as a .22 can reflect off the skull and only cause a superficial damage. It must be just the wrong angle, or maybe I was just using gutless bullets, but I find one good place to aim (apart from what everyone else has said) is behind his ear if he is looking away, or broadside. Ofcourse it's all so easy sitting in front of a computer, and a different story once the heat is on....

If you can get your hands on a 22 mag that would be even better.

I'll second that! 22mag is an excellent fox caliber. But back to your original question, yes inside of fifty yards a 22 hollowpoint will do the job. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've shot many an eastern grey fox with a .22LR. It WILL do the trick. Of course any head shot will send lights out, but if you shoot them dead in the shoulder with a good hollow point (Mini Mag's work well for me), they flop like a fish out of water for about 3 secs & thats it. You will not have to go looking. Pull it behind the shoulder & off he will go (to die about 50-75 yards later). A 22mag in the shoulder will stop them like the hammer of Thor. Big diff in the two, but the 22LR is effective enough by all means.

I have killed many fox with 22mag and 22lr I killed three grays a couple of months ago with my 22mag farthest was 120 yds I shoot remington 33 gr v max in my mag and cci stingers in my long rifle the stingers kick butt for a 22 long rifle

Your 22 LR will do the trick if you keep them close, a 22 Mag would be better. your shotgun will also work with heavy turkey loads, No. 2 shot, BB shot. I have killed them with NO. 4 buck but that puts excessively large holes in them (so my fur buyer says)
Vapredhunter where are you located? I am in Newport News and hunt all around the southeast corner of the state.
