Made 2 sets starting around 8:45. First set was pretty much a complete waste of time. Classic wind shift scenario. Was great wind at truck but after hiking in to setup it was completely different. Thought about trying to work out a marginal setup but talked myself out of it.
Second setup was about 10 miles from first but closest stand I could pull off a southeast wind, and one of the few spots I have that isn’t still covered in some sort of ag crop. Snuck up the edge on the north side of the field and scanned and picked up something out in another field on the southwest corner of the property. It was only visible because of the farmer’s tractor road between the two fields. I wasn’t sure what it was but had a suspicion that it wasn’t deer.
Here’s where it got pretty cool. I used a closed reed cottontail call I got from PM member LONEHOWL a few months back. Told myself if I saw one milling around I was going to use a handcall. This was a “close enough” situation! I made a few semi soft rabbit distress sounds and this young female cut through the woods rather than take the road between the fields. She popped out about 100 yards across the field and I let the Tikka eat for the first time this season.
Pretty young female. Didn’t hold up well to the 75gr V-Max!
