With so much wisdom and experience on this board I thought I'd solicit some input.

Particular interest in suggested mfg, model, caliber, cartridge affordability, scope suggestions, etc.

He is a good shot with his .22 rimfire and his 20ga Rem 870 youth.

We live on the East Coast, but do a lot of coyote hunting with Grandpa out west.

The budget is thin and he's paying half himself with money he's received for Christmas and b-days and earned doing extra jobs around the neighborhood, so he'll be invested in it.

TFF. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I'll have to break you of that habit someday..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

This is probably quite obvious but here goes...

Be sure to pick a rifle that fits him yet something he could grow into. It's not fun trying to shoulder a rifle that you cant get up quick enough for coyote hunting.

+1 Perferator

On a budget the Stevens would be my pick (in fact I shoot one). You can cut the stock for him now,or pick up a Savage youth stock, and put a full size one on when that would fit him. My guns are all cut to youth size, I've cut Stevens stocks and swapped in youth stocks for myself.

I bought my Son a Weatherby 243 Vanguard that came with 2 stocks. Youth and Adult I put a Nikon 3X9X50 on it. He shot it a while then took my Remington 308 away from me.

Howa has a package that you can get that has a youth stock and an adult stock so that when he gets older he can just change the stock and have a gun that will last a lifetime.

I just Rhett (7) a H&R Super Light Youth in a 223. He can grow in it. He does well with it and loves to shoot it. Now, just need to get a coyote with it.
BTW- It shoot good too.

Encore in 223 or 204 and different barrels as he graduates to larger targets. This will be a gun that will hold value as opposed to a Savage, H&R etc. Single shot will help develop the patience of one shot - one kill.

Oh I am concerned, but I was thinking a better package would be an A-bolt with a Simmons 3-9

I had a hard time getting my breathe back after that one. Knowing 2muchgun's position on the A-Bolts. That was funny, thanks, I needed that.

I don't think 2MG is any more fond of Simmons scopes than he is A-Bolts.
That was a double whammey. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
I ducked and it wasn't even aimed in my direction. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Stevens 200 in 243.

That was pretty much my first real rifle (savage 116), killed several deer with it and a few yotes too. It shoots good, and I'll never get rid of it since my dad bought it for me as a christmas present. But I think back and wish my first gun would have been a little nicer like a wood stocked model 7. That would make a great gun for a kid and something special when he gets older. It is probably a little more than you want to spend and he'll probably get a few nicks on the stock but teach him to take care of it and he'll have it forever.
