Opinions on Rem 700 VTR

I have the opportunity to buy a Rem 700 VTR in 17 Fireball. I was unaware that Remington made such a rifle with a triangular barrel. It looks weird and has a build in muzzle brake.

I mainly will use this for bench shooting at paper and prairie dogs shoots. What is your opinion of this setup verses the traditional round barrel varmint set-up.

I appreciate your input.

Bill

My opinion is buy the round barrel setup. The .17 don't kick hard enough for a brake to benefit you in any way. However, they are loud as he11 and very annoying. Also not the greatest looking IMO....

I shot one in 308, it shot good but I just don't see any benefit from the rifle. I heard that if you get one hot it's done because of stress on the barrel. That guy also said that dos Equis taste the same as bud light, so take that for what it is. I love dos Equis...

How loud would this rifle be due to build in muzzle brake? It has a 22 inch barrel but with the muzzle brake, the rifling is exentially a 20 inch barrel. How much velocity would be lost?

Thanks,

Bill

The only good thing about a triangle barrel is they won't roll off the table! Buy a round one and ditch the brake as said by others!!

My son has one in 22-250 it shoots good, is loud with the brake, but with hearing protection it's not an issue. He likes the short barrel.

This rifle is 'not' very popular because of the triangle barrel. You will get and hear a lot of pushback from people because it's not conventional. Change or something different is not always a welcome mat to many. Having said that, the barrel is short, the gun shoots fine with hand loads, the odd look of this rifle will hurt the resale value. So if you purchase one, make sure you get it at a handy price.

Most neh sayers have never shot one in their life and base there opinion on perception alone. I'm not saying these fellas that posted have never shot one but I suspect most have not. I have the utmost respect for a couple members opinions on this thread. They have helped me many times, but on this rifle we must agree to disagree. Over 1,200 rounds through mine and going strong.

Hi Eric. FWIW, I'm not doggin' on your rifle. I don't care for the looks of the triangular barrel. I don't care for brakes. Too loud. My ears are already not what they used to be due to the loud environments in which I work and shooting without hearing protection too many times when I was younger. But those are personal preferences. Nobody said the rifle was not a shooter or commented on it's performance. I like 700s. I just prefer round barrels without brakes....

Ken,

I never thought that for a minute. No issues here at all and you have more knowledge about Remintons than I will in a lifetime. I guess I just tend to go for the ugly red headed stepchild!

I think I can work a trade for this 17 Fireball in Rem 700 VTR and have about $550 invested. Supposedly it is new in box or has only been fire with less that a box of ammo.

Would this be a decent investment?

Bill

I had one in 308. Once I changed the original crappy stock out it shot pretty good. Louder than my other 308's

Once more, I agree with 2much. Its not my $$ so spend it however. I just personally don't care for the triange barrels. Old school I guess.
