Oregon spring bear

I was lucky and drew a spring bear tag for the "west blues" unit in NE Oregon. I know the Mount Emily unit fairly well but have only elk hunted it. This tag I drew combines several units but the two that I believe have the best numbers of bear are in the Walla Walla unit and the Mount Emily. Hopeing that someone here can help me focus an area so I wont be wasting alot of time. Anyone ever hunt spring bear in the West Blues?

I've Spring bear hunted the unit alot. I can give you a few areas to look at.
Your best bet is wait till the Couse roots are ready, The bears are more visible then and stay out longer.

The bear numbers are high in the whole area, with better than one per square mile.

Thank you severe, I was thinking late in the season would be best. Do you think the Walla Walla is better than the Mount Emily? Not sure how to send a PM to you but will keep trying. Maybe I can trade you some elk spots for bear spots. Dennis

Just got your message Dennis, I think I got you replyed to. Kinda feeling my way here, kinda like crossing a creek in the dark. RS

Heres a nice track I found the end of Nov The folding knife measures 7 1/2". This bear headed over the east side and walked out of the snow, couldn't follow him on frozen ground. Would have loved to find where he holed up for the winter.

Oh ya that looks like a good bear! Sure looking towards May up that way with snow we had this year. I have a bear that I want to get this fall also, he? has a trail that is real wide and traveled a lot, I followed this trail for 1 + mile and never found anything but his tracks[I was archery elk hunting]. I found where he has scratched a tree just about 4 feet up on each side and the claw marks are about 3/4 to an inch apart. Does the scratch marks mean anything? The trail is really beat down by the bear and fresh. I would sure like to be with you when you shoot a bear this year with the recurve...I will be back up...GRIN

whtelk, Still putting the snow down and freezing most every night. Snow level has been coming down to 20-2500 ft.

Might be a May hunt for sure.

Not sure about scratch mark low on a tree, they say the high marks are done with the teeth for a territory and I'm bigger than you marker.

Boy this year has been some winter hasnt it. Sure hope we can get to where we want in May even.
Still running bobcats? I use to have a friend in high school who had several cat hounds and we would run the cascades and the coast range,,,,sure fun.

Not chasin the Bobs anymore this year, dogs think somethings haywire.

I have put some miles on the sled looking at tracks, trying to get a handle on whats traveling were. No shortage of big cats, lots of young females tracking up the snow. Huge carry over of coyotes, big deer eaters. RS

Severe and whtelk,
It's sure good to hear people talking about this part of the country for a change. If you don't mind me butting in, where about is home?

I actually live in the mid valey [ Lebanon ] now but spent time in Christmas valley besides other areas ranching. My most favorite area in our great state would have to be NE Oregon.

whtelk,
I grew up in the Canyonville/Myrtle Creek area; still my favorite part of the state. I used to hunt the tiller area, and elk hunted in the tioga unit. by the way welcome to the board (I haven't visited much lately).

Later
