Out with the 22-250

Called in a coyote this evening, hit him at roughly 130 yrds. Nocked down on the ground all good. Ejected the round looked up and he's running as fast as I've ever seen one go.😡

So my first impression of those 53g vmax going 3770 is not stellar. First time using them could be my last....I know one is not a lot to go off of but I have other choices that would work tons better.

Going back in the morning to see if I can find him. (I do hate wounding any animal )

Nothing wrong with the caliber try different ammo. Vmax seem to frag bad , I know I use 22-250 50gr vmax. Best 22cal bullets I ever used were 50gr combined technology bullets from nosler. More of solid base and put coyotes down if I did my part. They don’t sell them anymore for reloading. I’m sure there’s even better out there. Vmax seems like it’s more for prairie dogs. Just my opinion.

Where did you hit him? Not trying to talk you out of your decision but I’ve had nothing but positive experiences with the 53 gr vmax. Granted my 22-250 is only pushing them at 3470fps.

Guess it’s kinda hard to tell what happened without recovering the animal though.

I agree...have shot lots of coyotes with the 22-250. It's the first with this particular bullet since I replaced the barrel. Went from a 14 twist to a 10 twist.

Duhhh it was hard quarter to shot and I put it on the shoulder...probably splashed but I won't know unless I find it

Most likely a Splash!

Ive had that happen with 53 vmax in my 22-204 on coyotes.

I like the Nosler Ballistic tip and Berger targets much better than any of the 22 Caliber vmax on coyotes!

Let us know if you find the coyote and what the damage is?

Thanks

Last Sunday I had it happen shooting my 22-250. 103yds took 3 rounds in the chest. #4 shot to the head finally ended it. So I’m in the same boat with you. I believe the nosler bt has a better base that might work better. I will be testing them out being I’m also looking for killing bullet.

Could it have been a heart shot? Being quartering away like you say its not likely but I have had some heart shot coyotes drop them take off like a shot only to drop 40 yards away at a dead run

Do you have a picture of this coyote after the shots?

Coyote update

Well I spent a couple of hours looking around and came up empty handed.
I did find some blood and a mark on a small sapling where he had rubbed up against, and then lost the blood trail. Did a grid search but no go.

Decoyed
It sucks but shit happens, not the first lost and it won't be the last.
But I put in the effort to go look the next day so there's that.

Very true...thought it might be a interesting conversation on others experiences.

I use 6mm's...6br, 243 and 6 creed for drt's. At least that has been my experience over the last 12+ years.

Shoot a coyote, frontal, with a 25/06. Don't remember which bullet as it was years ago but probably 75gr v-max or 75gr hp.
The coyote appeared to have dropped on the spot. I went out to retrieve said coyote from rather thick sage brush and no coyote to be found.
Hunting partner for the day and also filming spots the coyote 600yrds away retreating with us own severed leg in it's mouth.
💩 crap happens.

Proof can be seen on Coyote Rage if you can find a copy.
