What kind of owl decoys do you use for crow calling? This is my set up, with some 8 Lohman crow decoys, I just paint the necks white to resemble our Pied crow, our main pest. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

I have looked over the sites and cannot find very many choices of owl, this one stands some 48cm high ( 20 inches)and is about 10 inches wide when viewed from the air, its nice and "fat" and easy to spot. His big eyes are also realistic, lucky for me the stand he stands on is hollow and fits just perfect over the wire fence upright at my calling stand, a perfect fit.

I face it down wind as this is the direction most crows will approach from, they enjoy wind under their wings for lift, so facing that way gets me best results. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

It is the wrong time of year now to call them, just before breeding time is best ( October) now our wheat is tall also so they fall into the long wheat and we cant get them, its also soaking wet in their! Today I shot 12 in an hour, it was very quiet, but I also began very late due to business commitments.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

The lohman crows are pop up plastic, and inflate fast on their own, they cost just $3 each, the owl is about $10. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Anyway, this owl seems to work ok, just the educated ones veeeeeeeeeeeer away fast!

Yes it is 6mm, growth is getting tall, had good rain but to much rain is also bad, November we cut. Those C Harvesters have a big job /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif But for hunting the crows its harder as they fall in that tall thick wheat and we cant get in to get them, its to muddy and wet, it also damages the crops /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif.

But hey, we cant have the best of both worlds everytime /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Only time I use decoys is when I'm using a feeding set-up in the pecan orchards, and then I'm trying to replicate a peaceful group of a dozen crows feasting on the nuts and enjoying an easy sip of water out of the irrogation leaks. My fight sets are now used mostly in my run and gun hunting and decoys just take too much time to set up, limits the number of stands I can make in a mornings time which equates to less birds. I do have an owl, it's become a truck bed queen. Think I used it twice last year on birds that seemed to be wise and didn't see where it helped any. But it does see alot of countryside riding in the back of the truck though.

Edit for side note: The country your hunting, atleast in those pictures, is ALOT more open that what I'm hunting. Visibility even on the orchard hunts ain't very far due to foilage. On R&G hunting we get inside small planted pines when we can, and that is extremely tight cover.

AfricaPredator : I tried to find the Lohman crow decoys here using info from one of your posts. All I could find was a wholesaler who will not sell direct to me. Do you know a retail outlet where I can get them ? Thanks for your help.

As an aside. Owl decoys are also good for keeping the pigeons away at home. It is a chore to clean up their droppings, so the owl decoy gets a lot of work.

Another note: If you are in a windy place, then you'd better anchor the decoy down well, or it will be gone after a big wind storm

Hmmmmmmmmm........it's aboiut time for me to break out my remote controlled Hawk again so I can attack a certain somebody's Owl decoys.......I just love watching him go back and forth from the owl to the truck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

To answer your question about our Owl decoys; the ones we have over here are just like yours. Big hollow base so it can sit on a a fence post.
Looks like ya did a good job on "pieing" your decoys. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Victor , that owl I am using is from America, made in New Mexico, its born and bred in the big ol USA /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

BUT hey, the crows dont know its American, so i dont tell them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I have an EDGE EXPEDITE bird decoy I will use next time on crows, the bird moves and chirps. Will work well, or at least I hope so /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif
