Owls and coyotes

I was curious if anyone has noticed a correlation between owls habitating an area and the lack of coyotes. Since they both hunt a lot of the same species and basically compete for the same food I was wondering if they might inhabit different areas. I have noticed in the evenings when there are owls around there never seem to be coyotes. Anyone else? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Here at the firehouse were I have more time then brains at times I have observed both a large number of coyotes and owls. You can go out after dark with a hawk call and get 5 or 6 owls in the trees around you, then in the day light hours I observe several coyots in the fields around the station. I think they are in the same areas.

One night I drove up the road to practice on two new calls I bought. I did some rabbit distress and all kinds of howls and barks. I got two warning barks back and 1 minute later some hoots/screech from a tree right above me. I think it was an owl but I never saw it. I have seen a barred owl 500 feet from there in the light. Also where I hunt there are fisher and red tail hawks and coyote. I think they all live together even though they would like to kill eachother. PC

Be careful calling around Owls at night. They will dive for you when they here the distress sound thinking you are the prey. They can cause damage.

that sort of happened to me and a friend quite a few years ago when we 13 or 14,,we were back to back and the caller was going and we would periodically turn our red covered flashlights on(i didn't say we were smart)we heard a noise and we were kind of nudging each other, about that time an owl came down right above us and scared the hell out of me and my friend,,but we figured out that it was flapping above us and then came on down to see what we were i guess.
when i tell people that story some of them tell me no way because an owl can see at night and the owl WOULD KNOW we were humans and not bother looking at us,,,they are wrong /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
